Sacred Heart controversy
apparently is calming down

Sacred Heart Catholic Church apparent
ly lias calmed down.
Last May the Rev. Dale Hardes and the
Rev. Thomas Kozcny were dismissed from
the parish by Bishop Glennon P. Flavin.
Hardes and Kozeny are members of the
Oblates of Mary Immaculate, a group com
mitted to working for social justice, which
led the two priests to speak out on
controversial issues such as nuclear dis
armament and abolishing the death
penalty.
Their replacement is the Rev. Ronald
Patterson, who said the parish is returning
to a low-key approach.
"There are no great problems at Sacred
Heart," said Patterson. "We're getting back
to a normal routine."
Lincoln's Spanish speaking community
was particularly unhappy with the removal
of -Hardes and Kozeny because of then
active role in the Hispanic community. The
assistant pastor of the Newman Student
Center, the Rev. Michael Jacels, is now
the liaison with the Hispanic community.
"Although I am based here in the New
man Center, the Hispanic center for
Lincoln is still at Sacred Heart where we
are doing great business together," Jackels
said.
"We're getting to know each other," he
said. "There still is a lot of healing that has
to take place, though."
Tony Esquivel, a parishioner at Sacred
Heart, led a petition drive to bring back
Hardes and Kozeny after their dismissal.
"Definite progress has been made late
ly," Esquivel said. "Representatives of the
Hispanic community just met with the
bishop last week and there is some com
munication going on now."
Esquivel described the bishop as being
very conservative. Although priests may
not agree with the bishop, they must go
along with him because of their vow of
obedience.
When Hardes and Kozeny were trans
ferred, a shelter for people who need food
and a place to stay was closed.
"These services that were provided be
fore need a certain amount of money to
get going again," Esquivel said. 'The
bishop doesn't support this particular
program."
Esquivel praised Jackels as being con
siderate and sympathetic to the Hispanic
community.
"Father Jackels believes in what he is
doing and he is a good priest," Esquivel
said. "Our main concern is to keep our
Spanish mass going."
