Summer in ths City

Horses, boats and balloons
provide unique summer dates
By Cindy Gardner
The summer sun shouldn't cast a
sliadow over the romantic hearts of
Lincoln. A variety of unique activities for
two are available in and near the capital
city.
Summertime may be the perfect time to
make your one-and-only into the wild, blue
yonder. For $175, you can enjoy a hot air
balloon ride in the skies above Lincoln.
Wayne Hailing and his partner Loren
Nansel offer the rides through Aero
Statique Balloons, 2701 Everett St. Rides
are about one hour long and can be arrang
ed at the customers' convenience.
A $25 deposit and the right weather
conditions are required for the ride, Hailing
said. A calm day with winds under 10 miles
per hour is necessary.
Hailing said a number of gift certificates
for balloon rides were sold at Christmas
and many of those are starting to be re
deemed. Balloon rides for one are also
available for $100.
IF YOU'D RATHER keep your feet on
the ground, or at least close to it, boats
and canoes can be rented by the day or for
the weekend.
Archer Arms, 3295 A St., rents canoes
for $10 a day or $25 a weekend. Six
canoes are available for rent and reservat
ions should be made two weeks in advance.
Archer Arms prefers that the canoes not go
go too far out of Lincoln and requires a
$10 deposit that is refunded when the
canoe is returned in good condition.
Paddle, fishing and a pontoon boat can
be rented from Inland Shore Marina, Inc.
at Branched Oak Lake. Allen Johnson, who
operates the marina, said four paddle boats
are available for rent and more are being
purchased. The paddle boats may be rent
ed by the hour for use at Branched Oak
Lake.
Six 14-foot aluminum fishing boats also
will be available for rent from the marina
this summer. The boats hold three people
and cost $35 a day. The fee includes gas.
Larger 16-foot fishing boats for four fisher
men rent for $45 a day plus gas.
The marina also has one pontoon boat
for rent. Johnson said the boat rents for
$55 a day plus gas and can hold 10 to 12
adults.
Johnson also said a marina will be open
ing at Pawnee Lake, 15 miles northwest of
Lincoln. Boat rentals and fast food will be
available at the bait shop which will be
located between the two beaches.
IF WATER and sky don't sound like
your idea of a fun date, perhaps land will.
Horses and limosines are just two of the
date-on-dry -soil opportunities.
The Pioneer Stables located at Pioneers
Park have 12 to 16 horses available for
rent. Stable owner Nancy Brown said
horses rent for $6 per hour per horse. A
group of eight or more riders can rent
horses on a weekday for $5 per hour.
Brown said reservations should be made
at least two days in advance for weekend
riding.
Pioneers Park has 4lA miles of wooded
trails where the horses may be taken. The
horse rental business slows down in July
and August, Brown said, not because it's
too hot for horses but because it's too hot
for people.
If your idea of a date means being safe
and comfortable indoors and getting there
in style, Limosines of Nebraska, 3325 A
St., may have the answer for you.
LaDonna Brayman said the service rents
long, formal Cadillac limosines for $35 for
the first hour and $25 for each additional
hour. Reservations and a $35 down pay
ment is required. The rest of the rental fee
may be paid to the chauffer at the end of
the evening.
If it sounds like summer dating will
burn a hole in your pocket book, don't be
discouraged. Lincoln has 37 parks and
playground areas which can be enjoyed for
free.
