With a No. 6 national ranking and a
berth in the Big Eight post-season tourna
ment already clinched, the Nebraska base
ball team travels to Norman, Okla., this
weekend for Friday and Saturday after
noon double-headers against the Sooners.
While the ranking given by Collegiate
Baseball to Nebraska is the highest ever
received by a Cornhusker baseball team,
another Big Eight team is closer to the top
of the list. Oklahoma State, 124 in confer
ence play, sits three spots above Nebraska
in the No. 3 spot. But Nebraska Assistant
Coach Ray Tromba said the Huskers
cannot worry about the Cowboys.
"We can't control what happens in Co
lumbia,.. Tromba said referring to the
Oklahoma State-Missouri series this week
end. "All that concerns us is going down to
Oklahoma and winning four games."
It appears that the conference champion
ship will be a dogfight between the Huskers
and the Cowboys.

This is the final Big Eight series for Ne
braska, while Oklahoma State still must
face Kansas in a four-game stand next
weekend. Although a berth in the
team Big Eight tournament is assured for
the Huskers, Tromba said the team is still
shooting for the conference championship.
The result of a championship would be
automatic consideration for an at-largebid
to NCAA regional play.
Offense is the name of the game right
now for the Huskers, although the pitch
ing performances are getting better,
Tromba said. Nebraska's team batting ave
rage is .322 in conference play.
"The guys are all hitting the ball well,"
Tromba said, and singles out ccnterficlder
Roger Hill, who is hitting a .335 clip.
"Roger has raised his average almost 70
points in the last 15 games. He is doing a
great job with the bat," Tromba said.
Tromba also had praise for other Husker
swatters.

Although Tromba said his pitching
staff has not been as sharp as he would like
it to be, it drew some praise also.
"By and large, they have done well,"
he said .
Tromba gave good reports of Husker
hurlers Todd Oakes, Anthony Kclley and
Jeff Anderson. He said the Huskers need
improvement from Steve Gehrke and Bob
Sebra, the top two pitchers at the begin
ning of the season.
"It's no secret. We need to get Steve
Gehrke healthy and Bob Sebra back on
the right track," Tromba said.
The four starters against Oklahoma have
not been determined, but Tromba hinted
that Kelley, Oakes and Anderson will see
some hill action. The Husker pitchers
should recieve defensive support in the

The Huskers will have to keep an eye
out for John Russell, who Tromba said
"is on a tear." The Sooner outfielder, who
hit .348 with 16 homeruns last year, is
doing well again this year. Tromba said the
whole Sooner team hit the ball well last
weekend against Kansas State.
"Oklahoma will go up there and swing
the bats. They arc scoring some runsbut
they have been giving a lot of runs up," he
said.

Straight, Darrell Rogers and Brent Wor
cester, Tromba said. He added that he is
confident the Huskers can take the ser
ies. "There is no reason in the world why
we can't go down there and walk away
with four wins," Tromba said.
