Proposal outlines requirements for admissions
By Duane Retzlaff
This is the latest "discussion draft" of NU President
Ronald Roskens' admissions proposal, according to
Howard Ottoson, executive vice president for academic
affairs.
The proposal outlines the ways first-time freshmen can
be admitted to the university. Individual colleges may
have additional requirements.
The proposal does not apply to transfer students,
foreign applicants and non-degree students.
The Proposal:
Full Standing - Students must meet one of these op
tions to be admitted as a freshman in full standing:
A. Graduate from an accredited Nebraska high school
and submit scores from either the Scholastic Aptitude
Test or the American College Testing entrance examina
tions. Students in grades 9 through 12 must take:
- four years of language arts, such as English, speech
and literature;
- three years of mathematics, such as algebra, geo
metry, trigonometry, calculus and computer science;
- two years of sciences, such as biology, physics,
chemistry and earth sciences;
- two years of social sciences, such as American gov
ernment, world history, psycholgy and economics;
(In addition, it is recommended each student complete
at least a two-year sequence in a foreign language).
B. Graduate from an out-of-state accredited high
school completing the above required courses, rank in the
upper half of his or her high school class, and submit
either SAT or ACT scores.
C. Graduate from an accredited high school. Students
who cannot meet options A or B may be admitted by pre
senting a composite ACT or SAT score at levels to be de
termined by the NU Board of Regents at its May 15 meeting.
D. Show evidence of academic training equivalent to
a high school diploma, such as a General Educational
Development Test, and submit scores from the ACT or
SAT test.
Conditional Admittance: Graduates of an accredited
high school who have not completed the required courses,
or scored high enough on the ACT or SAT test may be ad
mitted on a conditional basis. Conditional students can
take college-level courses for which they arc prepared. To
advance to full standing students must make up their de
ficiencies by taking courses at a community college, a
high school or by correspondence through the UNL Di
vision of Continuing Studies.
Mature Students: Adults over 21 who do not meet the
above requirements, but present evidence of ability to do
university work, may be considered for special admission.
Students will be considered as non-degree students until
they qualify for admission in one of the university's
colleges.

If you're 18 or over you can rent a Ryder truck to use locally or on a
one-way (rent-it-here, leave-it-there) trip to another city
Compare costs before you make plans for moving at the end
of the semester With a truck you can take along your stereo, 10-speed,
clothes, all your stuff, and still have plenty of room for one or two other
people and their things, so you can share the costs. Compare that to a
plane ticket. Or even a bus.
