Tuesday, April 27, 1982 Page 14 Daily Nebraskan New site chosen for proposed recreation center By Mark Quandahl Talk and planning about the proposed UNL recreation center hasn't died, according to Dan Stellcr, director of the UNL Recreation Department. Rather, the center has run into a number of obstacles that must be resolved be fore planning can continue, he said. At a previous meeting of the recreation center planning board, a written program statement was presented defin ing the center's size and construction and maintenance costs, Stellcr said. At that session, the board decided to GIVE TO THE AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY. add a swimming pool and outdoor ice area to the pro posed facility. With the additions, the proposed building has grown to more than 100,000 square feet, he said. Unfortunately, it was discovered that the recommen ded site at 17th and Vine streets is too small for the lar ger building and traffic-flow problems would result. To solve these problems, the board commissioned a site subcommittee. Subcommittee members concluded that the ideal spot for the center would be on the Rock Island Railroad property at 18th and Vine streets. "It's a much better spot," Steller said. "It's the only space on campus that would work. There's plenty of room, and there would be no traffic problems." He also said that putting the building between the out door athletic fields around Vine Street would provide for a more cohesive recreation program. Steller said that the proposed building would probably be open from 7 aju. to midnight on weekdays, and 10 ajii. to 10 pjn. on weekends. Another obstacle is funding. "We can't use state money," Steller said, "because it's not a scholastic facility." He said the estimated $9 million to $12 million cost would be paid for by student fees, donations from pri vate corporations and possibly, matching grants. A program statement for the revised recreation center is slated to come before the planning board May 4. "We're hoping to clear that hurdle on May 4," Steller said. "If it's accepted, the statement will go on to a cen tral planning committee in June or July." After that, the plans would have to be approved by the NU Board of Regents. The architectural plans, specifications and drawings would then be drawn up. Later, a contractor would be selected. "If it's approved in the next few months, the facil ity might be completed, by the earliest, in 1985," Steller said. Lincoln Center - 1124'0' East Park -200No. 66th Two old shuttle buses including the "Big Red" bus will make the final run between East Campus and City Cam pus Friday, and the Lincoln Transportation System is making it a memorable event. Alex PiKelis, an LTS bus driver, said the buses will be decorated in black crepe and funeral bunting. In addition, he and another driver, Curt Saathoff, will be dressed as morticians. PiKelis said this is a way of thanking the buses for "long and faithful service." He said he has driven the campus route for four years. The buses were bought third hand in 1971, and accord ing to PiKelis, LTS has more than made their money on them. He said the two buses will be auctioned off. Eventually they will end up being sold for scrap parts, he said. PiKelis asked for "a somber mood by the riders at the end of this proud campus tradition." PiKelis said this "funeral" occurs during the same week that LTS is getting 10 new buses, and they figured it was about time they dumped these "garbage scows." He said each of the buses have been driven more than one million miles and will be in the shop all this week just so they will be ready for the day-long event. He said the buses haven't been used in a while and LTS decided that there should be a "media event" to comme morate their passing. 'This is time to reminisce," PiKelis said. "If you've ever had the opportunity to ride on one of these old coaches you know how bad it can be."
