Continued from Page 8 Steve Mayer , a member of the intramural champion basketball team the Sixers, said the quality of officiating isn't the cause of the abuse the referees receive. "I think the referees do a very good job. But it's a thankless job," Mayer said. "A lot of times you get a lot of tension between two ball clubs and the refs are the ones who they take it out on. There's an overemphasis on the win-at-all-costs attitude. A lot of guys don't play it for fun anymore, they play for blood." Most of the abuse the referees deal with is verbal, but Scheele said there were a few cases of physical abuse. "We've had referees pushed after making a call and we even had one struck," Scheele said. "Those are extreme cases and we don't put up with them. Anytime some thing like that happens, that player is through with intra murals for at least a year.. And depending on the severity of the incident, they may be through for the rest of their college years." "I've seen referees threatened by the players and quit because of it," Eldorado said. "When I catch a lot of hell from one of the players I try to turn the other cheek. If you give them a technical it can make matters worse. I think most of them realize how stupid they sound after the game is over. I've had a lot of players come up after the game and apologize for what they said." and Lights & Sounds Fantastic present MOVIE EYES The Untouchables The Erratics fx 1 ". j W tow mt u i.,,uii.i,.l,lll,m,rW,.rn.,ii..OTnmi,nll.n,,,,.M.,.lil.lanimr,,l.la,,iJ Novelty Act (Magic, Comedy, Juggling etc.) $75 Awarded Best Costume Fri., April 23 $4 at the Door $3 with KFMQ Q-Card show starts at 7:00 p.m. PERSHING AUDITORIUM ARENA So says the VA.
