"Entomology (insect studies) is working mainly around
the corn root worm," Lesoing said. "Prediction techni
ques and evaluation of pesticides are emphasized."
"Forestry has three major projects at the field lab -management
of vegetation for fire prevention for use in
railroad right-of-ways, the effects of wind rows in crop
production, and the selection of drought tolerant trees for
Nebraska," Lesoing said.
Vet science keeps both cattle and swine at the field lab,
Lesoing said. The herds are free of specific disease-rousing
agents, and are used in research projects.
Sahs said he hopes the field lab will continue to expand
and improve.
"We have felt the effect of UNL's budget cuts, but I
don't think it will hurt the program as a whole," he said.
Roy G. Arnold, vice chancellor for the IANR, said the
field lab has created a need to expand many programs on
East Campus.
"At one time there were cattle and swine in the area
where Mahoncy Park is now," Arnold said. "Because of
Lincoln's expanding population, we moved the herds to
Mead."
Arnold outlined some possibilities for the field lab.
"I would like to see further development in the areas
of irrigation efficiency, crops, land shaping, and possibly
a new headquarters building," Arnold said.
Arnold will preside at the ceremony at the field lab to
day at 3 p.m.
