In 1973, the St. Louis Symphony became one of 14 or chestras in the United States with a full 52-week season. In 1978, Leonard Slatkin became the first American mu sic director in the St. Louis Symphony's 100-year history. Slatkin, who began his conducting career with the orches tra in 1968, is one of the few American-born and American-trained n.usicians to become music director of a major symphony orchestra. The article went on to state, "Critics generally agree the St. Louis Symphony is becom ing one of the strongest orchestras in the country." During this, its 102nd season, the St. Louis Symphony will play 54 orchestral series, four Chamber Orchestra, 15 "Pops at Powell" and 38 educational concerts in its home at Powell Symphony Hall. The orchestra also tours re gionally and nationally including a yearly appearance at Carnegie Hall. The program for their performance here in Lincoln is Schumann's "Symphony No. 4 in D minor," and Shos takovich's "Symphony No. 8 in C minor, Op. 65."
