VanValkenburg, 46, spoke in the Geor gian Suite Tuesday in a speech sponsored by the Young College Republicans. An insurance agent who received his bachelor's degree in science at the Univer sity of Oklahoma and his MBA at UNL, VanValkenburg said he thinks education is something worth fighting for. "Every dollar spent on education re turns itself hundred-fold," he said. "If I get in, the univisity is never going to be underfunded. I won't let it be a second rate school." VanValkenburg said he proposes a five-to-20 year plan for UNL, "So we can see the direction of this school in the next two decades." He also favors a state stu dent loan program if federally funded cuts in financial aid result in people who want to go to college not having that opportuni ty because of lack of funds. He said he supports a "continuum of health care" which provides for people to the extent that is needed but does not over- or under-provide. "Health care costs are totally out of bound," he said. "Older people want to be independent but they also want to know that help is there if they need it." Congressional opponents from the 26th District include Sen. Don Wescly, about whom VanValkenburg said, "A bill sup posedly costs a taxpayer $14,000; that times 13 (the number of bills proposed by Wesely, none of which passed) plus Wese ly's salary means his cost to the taxpayer is about $200,000, from which they got no tiling." VanValkenburg, who labels himself "a modern workaholic," also shared his views on the tax system, which he deemed as "ar chaic and pitiful;" national defense, which he believes should be strong enough "to let the rest of the world know they cannot mess with us," and equal opportunity: "One woman-hour is worth 52 male-hours when you're planning a campaign," he said. VanValkenburg said he supports the Ne-braska-Niobrara water project and said that if not developed, lack of water could have a detrimental effect on the family farm and eventually on the family, which he said he regards as "the building block of society." "Our agriculture and livestock industry is the backbone of our economy. Loss of the family farm is a loss of history." VanValkenburg is married and has four children. i k uvv y i.,.r. : i (EoWsittlhieir's Mzzzza Sflrfh llrfh Family JL!Uo-lrU Special Coupon valid for $10.40 Family Special. Eat-in orders only, please.
