Wedekind hears colleges' innovations
ASUN Senate President Dan Wedekind and Second
Vice President Bob Fitzgerald shared information with
representatives from other campuses at the fourth confer
ence of the American Association of University Students
in Philadelphia March 31 through April 3.
"It was good to hear some updated information,"
Wedekind said. "It's very helpful to find out what other
universities are doing."
Wedekind said the organization is designed to include
all major research institutions in the United States. About
50 universities sent more than 300 representatives to the
University of Pennsylvania conference, according to the
AAUS news release.
This year's AAUS conference focused on the Rea
gan budget cuts, sexual intolerance and improving fac
ulty-student interaction. Various member institutions
brought information about their innovations to the
workshops.
Wedekind said financial aid cuts were a major concern
at the conference.
"What I was interested in was how other states are
looking at ways to fund financial aid," he said. "There
was some indication that the states have got to take the
place of the federal government."
Wedekind said much of his and Fitzgerald's time was
spent away from the workshops in planning a more devel
oped AAUS program and organizing future conferences.
"I feel very excited about the potential that this con
ference has," he said. "This is a whole new approach to
bringing information about what's going on."
