Colonial Dining Room
changes to self-serve
of soups and salads

Committee reports were given at the Union Board
meeting Wednesday night.
Union Board President Laura Meyer announced that
new tile has been installed on the second floor of the Ne
braska Union.
Meyer also announced that Sharon Ash of the Panhel
lenic Association has been appointed by Vice Chancellor
of Student Affairs Richard Armstrong to fill a faculty po
sition on the board . Meyer said Ash expressed interest in
working on the programs and activities committee of the
board .
Brian Wacker of the food service committee said Mon
day's opening of the Colonial Dining Room, featuring a
self-serve soup and salad bar, was well received.
He said one unidentified faculty member was upset
with the dining room's service change.
To promote the renovated dining room, Wacker said
50-cent coupons for the soup and salad bar will be given
to union staff members as an incentive.
Wacker also said Ron Pushcar, assistant director of
food services for the Nebraska Unions, suggested someone
wear a monkey costume and stand outside the dining
room to attract customers.
Having student talent perform in the dining room was
also discussed, Wacker said. The daily goal is 150 custom
ers in the dining room, he said.
March 8 to March 15 the Union Square grossed $7,600
in sales, and catering in the unions has increased, Wacker
said .
Wacker said the food service committee will go to
Omaha Tuesday to sec a Whirla Whip ice cream machine,
which allows adding an ingredient such as chocolate chips
to any flavor of ice cream.
The machine allows for any number and kind of ingre
dients to be added to ice cream by emulsifying the ingre
dients and ice cream. The cost of the machine, which
would be put in the bakery, is $7,500, Wacker said.
The board also approved a motion to study the possi
bility of having an on-campus pizza delivery service.
Sue Hansen of the operations committee said applica
tions for Nebraska Union office space are being taken.
Frank Kuhn, assistant director of operation for the Ne
braska Unions, si'id the new union plaza sign, which was
designed as a brick arch, is not structurally feasible. Kuhn
said problems may develop with bricks cracking because
of swaying. The arch may be constructed with steel only.
A second design includes pillars on either side of the
sign, which would resemble the pillars outside the Nebras
ka Union.
Director of the Nebraska Unions Daryl Swanson said
the union's budget for 1981-82 is in a near break-even po
sition, except for a $3,500 projected loss in food services
for the end of the year.

E Week offers look at engineering
This week's Engineering Week was designed to show
people what the engineering college is doing on
campus, said program chairman Cary Schmidt, a senior
in mechanical engineering.
The featured speaker for the week will be Albert
Hibbs of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Hibbs will
speak today at 1:30 p.m. in the Nebraska Union.
Admission is free.
Schmidt said the Jet Propulsion Laboratory works
in conjunction with NASA on the government's space
probes and unmanned satellites.
"The speech will be geared toward the general
public, and not over everyone's head," Schmidt said.
"Hibbs will tell what the average citizen has received
from the millions of dollars invested in the space
program."
Slides of planets from the Mariner and Voyager
space missions and movie clips which have never been
released will be shown, Schmidt said..
Other activites scheduled for this weekend include
a college of engineering open house from 2:30 p.m. to
9:30 p.m. today and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. tomorrow. It
features 159 projects done by students and faculty
members, such as a super mileage car and a boat for
doing reserach on the Missouri River, he said.
"We are showing the taxpayers what type of
research their tax dollars are being spent for," he said.
"We also have projects done in lab classes and comput
ers used by construction contractors."
A mouse trap race will also be at 2:30 p.m. today
in the union. 'The engineering students take regular
household mousetraps and design a car that will go a
certain number of feet in a certain amount of time
while carrying a construction brick," Schmidt said.
A banquet will be held for engineering students
Saturday night. James J. Reriier, president of Honey
well Control Systems, will be the speaker. Schmidt
said awards will be given to the outstanding senior,
junior and sophomore. Distinguished teaching awards
also will be presented, he said.
