Some students sunning, skiing over spring break
3y Peggy Reichardt
Spring break means rest and relaxation
or catch-up-on-homework time for many
UNL students. For others, however, the
week-long vacation means traveling across
the country.
Hie University Program Council is offer
ing a trip to Padre Island March 19 through
28. Jeff Lauber, program coordinator for
Campus Activities and Programs-East, said
94 UNL students will join 136 UNO stu
dents for the trip. Campus buses will leave
Friday at 1 p.m. from the East Union and
arrive back at 3 p.m. March 28. The $235
per person fee includes lodging in condo
miniums and transportation, but not food.
Lauber said highlights of the trip will
be visiting Matamoros, Mexico, March 24,
where tourists can bargain with shop
owners. He described the trip as "Lots of
sand, sea and hopefully some sun." This
is UPC's second Padre Island trip.
The UNL Recreation Department is
offering two trips during spring break.
The first excursion will take students to
the south rim of the Grand Canyon, said
Tim McGrath, recreation supervisor.
Twenty people divided into two groups
will make the trip. One group will take the
Tonto Trail into the interior of the canyon,
while the second will ride horseback down
the Tanner Trail to the Colorado River.
McGrath said the groups will see Indian
ruins and mining camps. The $150 cost
covers lodging, transportation and food
cooked by the travelers. The group will
be gone March 21 through 28.
The second recreation trip will be to the
Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico to skindive
in the Caribbean, said Mark Ebel, outdoor
recreation coordinator. The $340 fee in
cludes transportation to Houston, air fare
to Mexico, lodging in hotels or camp
grounds and insurance. Thirteen people
will take the trip March 18 through 28.
Swimming, hiking and touring Indian
ruins will highlight the trip, which Ebel
called "most popular in terms ot sign
up." He said the trip was "available to any
one who can swim."
Two groups are taking a spring break ski
trip to Steamboat, Colo. The UNL Ski
Club will vacation there March 19 through
26 for $227. The fee includes bus trans
portation, four days of lift tickets and lod
ging in condominiums. Ski Club presi
dent dave Knott said 47 club members
will make the trip, which features a wine
and cheese party on the mountain and
downhill beer races.
offered for $160. It is sponsored by Barry
Larson and Rob Wyant, employees of
the Ski Racquet in Omaha. Larson said
26 UNL students will join 13 Omahans
for the trip March 20 through 24. The fee
includes condominium lodging Sunday and
Monday, three days of lift tickets, bus
transportation and six kegs. Larson
said all 39 spots are filled.
International students have three
chances to travel together during spring
break. Two 'long weekend" trips to
Columbus and Neligh will give the stud
ents "a chance to see what life's like in
small rural areas," said Judy Wendorff,
coordinator of international student pro
grams. The trips are free and students will
stay in host homes. Twenty students will
go to Columbus and 10 will go to Neligh.
The third trip is to Chicago, where the
international students can experience "city
life," Wendorff said.
Ten students will stay at the Chicago
University International House, and see,
among other things, the Sears Building,
museums and ethnic food restaurants.
Wendorff said the $130 fee includes trans
portation in university vans and lodging.
For students who just can't bear to
leave school for a week, the Department of
Textiles, Clothing and Design is offering
a study tour, worth' one credit hour, to
Chicago. The $350 fee includes air trans
portation and tuition.
