Monday, March 8, 1982 Daily Nebraskan Page 7 ASUN approves Student Foundation; positions for eight members available By Lori Sullivan The newly formed Student Foundation will give UNL students a "very powerful and useful tool," ASUN Sen. Kathy Roth said. Hie senate last Wednesday voted to form the Student Foundation. The foundation board will have 10 members, one of which will be a faculty member and one of which will be a representative of the NU Foundation. The other eight will be students and voting members of the board. Students who have a grade point average of at least 2.0 and who are enrolled for at least six academic hours next year may apply immediately for a board position. The initial Student Foundation board members will be selected by a four-member ASUN committee. Roth said applications should be available in the ASUN office, Ne braska Union 1 15, by the end of March. The board should be operating before the semester ends, she said. The Student Foundation will function as a part of the NU Foundation. One problem, said Do ran Matzke, senate second vice president, is that the average student is not aware of the activities of cither the NU Foundation or the Student Foundation. Independent organization The NU Foundation is an independent volunteer organization that raises private support for NU through donations, according to Ed llirsch, the founation's vice president. Approximately $14 million a year is raised by the NU Foundation and currently $1.5 million is assigned to scholarship funds, llirsch said. Some notable landmarks that have come to UNL thr ough private donations and those of the NU Foundation include Mueller Tower, Broyhill Foundation, Love Library and Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery. Most donations to the NU Foundation are "ear-marked" for a designated use. Ilirsh said. However, he said, the Student Foundation could communicate the needs of the students and provide input to the NU Foundation to allocate non-designated funds. "We hear from the chancellor, the administrators and the faculty on what their needs are. The students should have a voice in telling us what their needs are," llirsch said. The Student Foundation could be asked by a group to provide funding for a specific project, raise the funds and allocate them for that purpose, Matzke said. For example, if a student could not afford travel ex penses to present a paper at a seminar, the Student Foundation could raise money for those expenses. Other possible fund-raising projects could be new typewriters for the library, tutoring assistance and equipment for the proposed new recreation center. Guidance appreciated The Student Foundation is happy to have the NU Foundation to give it guidance , Roth said . "The NU Foundation is one of the most successful groups of their kind," Roth said. "Because they are so successful, they can give advice and leadership to the Stu dent Foundation that is really going to be valuable." The Student Foundation's first project will be to help with the NU Foundation's annual telethon. The telethon has successfully solicited donations from UNL alumni, llirsch said. "They'll have good ideas, and we are very glad to have them," said llirsch. Matzke said next year's senate will support the Student Foundation. "1 think as far as continuity goes, it's there," Matzke said. "The Student Foundation is not an idea that came up in one senate and will be forgotten in the next." Roth encourages students to apply for membership in the Student Foundation to "use their talents to help the foundation." Applications will be taken before the end of the school year.
