r Friday, February 26, 1982 Daily Nebraskan Page 5 gl Letters Unbiased views needed Editor's note: Tlie Daily Nebraskan editorial policy explains that unsigned editorials represent the. opinion of the DaHy Nebraskan as an institution. Unsigned editorials are written by the members of the editorial page staff, Editor-in-chief Martha Murdock and Editorial assistant Pat Clark. Daily Nebraskan opinion is determined by the editor-in-chief. "One week from today, UNL students will go to the polls and cast their votes for ASUN Senate president and first vice president. They will be choosing the people who in the coming year will fight the battles and lead the char ges for student causes" (Daily Nebraskan, Feb. 24, 1982). Hopefully this decision will be a responsible one based on fact. I believe the unidentified author of this idea hopes so too, but the Daily Nebraskan staff cannot hope to improve the decision-making process by printing blat antly opinionated, unsigned editorials espousing one par ticular candidate. The "Wedckind deserves presidency" editorial epitomi zes shoddy journalistic practices. The editorial was printed without byline or signature, and if the author of the arti cle was given anywhere in the paper it was not readily visi ble. How can the editorial staff expect to promote respon sible decision-making when students cannot judge the val idity of the information source? Furthermore, since the Daily Nebraskan is the only large publication serving UNL, it is the public forum for political discussion and debate. If the Daily Nebraskan de sires to truly serve the student body, I suggest that oppos ing viewpoints also be offered on the editorial page. The students need good leadership, but leaders should be chosen by decisions based upon unbiased information. All editorials should be clearly signed, and if the Daily Nebraskan desires to print editorials espousing one partic ular candidate, then other opinions also should be offered. Melba I. Petrie Freshman Arts & Sciences, Chemistry Child planning defended This letter is in response to Chris Kocnig's letter (Daily Nebraskan, Feb. 22) on Matthew Millca's editorial (Daily Nebraskan, Feb. 19). In Millca's editorial the pope is blamed for over population and high infant mortality. In Kocnig's letter, Planned Parenthood receives all the blame for declining morals and teen-age pregnancies. Kocnig says the church's reason to promote natural family planning is to "impose self control on individuals or for curbing one's emotions." The Roman Catholic Church believes only in natural con traception because of its definition of life. The Catholic Church believes as soon as conception occurs a human being, with a soul, is born. This is the reason why, and not because it curbs emotions. In Koenig's letter it sounds like regardless of marital status it is all right to have intercourse as long as it is not to excess. As for Koenig's opinion that the Planned Parenthood philosophy is an irresponsible "Do it but don't get caught" ideal, Koenig doesn't seem to be very knowledgeable about Planned Parenthood. Planned Par enthood realizes teen-agers will have intercourse, no matter what society says, so Planned Parenthood is set up to at least make teen-agers responsible if they decide to have intercourse. Unwanted pregnancies or abortions are one of the things Planned Parenthood is working to eliminate. I think it takes more maturity and responsibility to go to Planned Parenthood to get contraception devices rather than to wonder a couple of months later how the female got pregnant and what to do with the unborn child.
