Senate candidate says
state needs Republican
By Pat Higgins
The 1982 election will determine what direction the
country will take in the future, said Jim Keck, a Republi
can running for U.S. Senate. Keck, brought in to speak at
the Union by the College Republicans, said Nebraska
needs a Republican senator to work with Ronald Reagan.
"Now is a time that is a window of opportunity to
make changes in the government. In the fall of 1980, the
people gave a mandate to change from the ever growing
federal government," Keck said.
Keck said the three major issues in the upcoming cam
paign arc economy (particularly high interest rates), agri
culture concerns and control of water resources. High in
terest rates arc caused by deficit spending, Keck said, add
ing that he thought the fiscal 1983 budget has too large of
a deficit. Keck said the current recession is not a Ronald
Reagan recession.
"Rcaganomics haven't really taken effect yet," Keck
said .
Keck, a former Air Force general, said the defense bud
get should be scrutinized as closely as the rest of the bud
get. Incumbent Sen. lid Zorinsky has a high, but shallow
level of approval in Nebraska and can be defeated, Keck
said.
"I'd Zorinsky was dead wrong on Nicaragua. The prob
lem in 1:1 Salvador stems from the Sandanista government
in Nicaragua," Keck said.
Keck said Ronald Reagan will come to Nebraska to
campaign for him. He added that the Republican party
Bereuter announces
re-election campaign
Rep. Douglas Bereuter announced his candidacy for re
election to a third term Tuesday morning in Lincoln.
Bereuter said his experience is an important factor in
making the decisions that lie ahead.
"Ve are making critical changes in the direction and
scope of our government right now," Bereuter said in a
press release. "I believe that my experience as a member
of Congress and my experience in Nebraska are especially
valuable as we make those changes. In tough times, in a
volatile political environment, in a changing Congress, ex
perience is an especially important asset."
Bereuter, a Republican, made his announcement at a
press conference in Lincoln and then made similar
announcements in Beatrice, Fremont, Nebraska City, Nor
folk, Seward, South Sioux City and York.
Lawrence Sather, a Democrat from Fremont, is the
only other announced candidate for Bereuter's seat.
