Muslim office ransacked
By Leslie Kendrick
The Muslim Student Association and
Muslim Student Association Persian Speak
ing group's office on the third floor of the
Nebraska Union was ransacked Friday
about 1p.m.
The second group is a pro-Khomeini
organization.
The group's office was strewn with pap
ers and books. A lighted picture of Kho
meini was broken. Mohammad Bolori
zadeh said the damage was less than $2.0.
The Persian speaking Muslim group
accused the Iranian Student Association,
an anit-Khomeini group, of ransacking
the office.
Nasser Ghadimi said he was standing
in the association's office when eight peo
ple from the ISA, who had been demon
strating in front of the union Friday after
noon, came into the office. Ghadimi said
the group asked for a member of the Per
sian speaking group who was taking pic
tures of the demonstration.
Ghadimi told the eight that the member
was not there and then went to the office
of Peter Levitov, director of International
Education Sendees. Frank Kuhn, assistant
director of the Nebraska Union, was then
called. When Ghadimi, Levitov and Kuhn
went to the group's office, they found
the room ransacked. Kuhn asked the eight
people to leave, Ghadimi said.
A spokesman for the ISA said he and
several demonstrators saw a person taking
pictures of the demonstration from inside
the union. The spokesman said that accord
ing to new regulations from the Iranian
government, if Iranian students demon
strate against Khomeini, their funds will
be cut off. The students cannot work in
the United States and would be left with
out money if their funds were cut, the
spokesman said.
I le also said he was sure none of the ISA
members ransacked the Persian speaking
group's office.
Ghadimi said the ISA members went
to the classroom of the student they
thought was taking pictures. Ghadimi said
they threatened the student and took a
camera the student was carrying. Ghadimi
said the camera was checked out from the
College of Architecture.
UNL Police said no charges had been
filed against the ISA. Dean of Students
David DeCoster will receive a copy of
the police report and will decide what
action will be taken on the matter, police
said.
Buildings
Continued from Page 2
An example of the re-use
of an older building in
Lincoln is the Lincoln Ex
change restaurant at 132 S.
13th St., Murphy said. The
building was rehabilitated
under the previous tax
credit laws though.
Rehabilitating buildings
should be encouraged be
cause older buildings give
interest and diversity to a
neighborhood, he said. They
also provide a sense of time,
he said.
"Historical buildings are
like history books, except
they are unedited," he said.
"You can learn a lot about
past times and people by
the way they worked and
how they lived."
