$200 allocated to committee
for alcohol policy research
By Lori Sicwcrt
Members of the Residence Hall Associ
ation voted Thursday to allocate $200 to
an ad hoc committee studying RIIA's pro
posed alcohol policy.
The policy would allow all students,
even minors, to drink alcohol in their resi
dence hall rooms.
The $200 will be used to pay miscel
laneous expenses committee members will
incur while researching the policy.
Bill Mack, Harper Hall president and
chairman of the committee, said a lawyer
or law clerk may be hired to give commit
tee members advice on the policy's legal
aspects, especially on whether a student's
residence hall room can be considered his
permanent residence. State law allows min
ors to drink alcohol in their permanent
residences.
Also, committee members would like to
visit each regent at his home to talk with
him about the proposal. The money will
help pay for travel expenses, Flack said.
Flack said the regents might pay more
attention to students who contact them in
dividually rather than at their regular meet
ings in Lincoln.
In other business, RI1A voted to write a
letter to the Committee for Fees Alloca
tion to protest proposed cuts in the Recre
ation Department and union budgets.
A representative from the Recreation
Advisory Council and from the Campus
Activities and Programs office asked RHA
members for their support.
Jim Brockmann from the Recreation
Advisory Council said CFA is recommend
ing a budget $118,000 less than the one
submitted by the Recreation Department.
The lower budget would mean some rec
reation areas on campus, such as two gyms
in Mabel Lee Hall, would be open fewer
hours because there would not be enough
money to pay supervisors' salaries, Brock
mann said.
Money for intramural trophies and T
shirts, replacement of old equipment and
for preventive maintenance, such as point
ing, also would be cut, he said.
Ennio Quevedo, activities coordinator
for Campus Activities and Programs, said
much of the proposed $102,000 cut in
the unions' budget is focused on CAP.
The CAP office advises campus organi
zations and supervises the University Pro
gram Council, New Student Orientation,
the Women's Resource Center and the Cul
ture Center, Quevedo said.

Women profit as typists in home
Uvcryonc would like to make some ex
tra money. Most people have to go out
side of their home to do this. However, a
few individuals have discovered a way to
stay home, and make money. They type
for others.
Betty Parker got started typing at home
when she worked for the university. Park
er said she started typing dissertations for
students and the business "sort of snow
balled from there."
Parker is a teacher with a masters de
gree in English. She corrects spelling, gram
mar and punctuation errors.
The charge is a dollar a page.
"Some might charge less but I feel I'm
worth the extra cost because of my English
skill," Parker said.
The business is steady, Parker said, but
it usually increases toward the end of a
semester.
Parker likes the extra money and being
able to stay home with her toddler. But she
also likes the papers.
"The dissertations are really interesting
and about fun subjects" Parker said. "I
also like to meet students it gets me back
into the university atmosphere."
Parker said she types for a lot of foreign
graduate students.
"They usually call back and refer their
friends to me," Parker said. She also gets
referrals from retired professors and de
partment personnel.
Charlcne Buet titer also types so she can
stay home with her children. Buettner said
she does any kind of typing, and charges
a dollar a page.
Ten i Harlan charges by the hour for her
typing services. The charge is S4.50 per
hour.
Harlan's clients are usually students who
respond to her advertisements.
Companies also offer business services
such as typing. Manpower Temporary Ser
vices, 122 N. 1 1 St., is one. The cost is $7
per hour, with a half-hour minimum, said
typist Margaret Woelfle.
