Jim Haster, who spent two months in El Salvador and Guatemala in 1980, spoke to about 25 people in the Nebraska Union. His talk and the movie .' Salvador: Another Vietnam? were sponsored by UNL's Latin American Solidarity Com mittee and Progressive Student Union. El Salvador is in the midst of a bloody civil war brought about by the extreme poverty of most Salvadorans, Master said. The majority of the land and power in El Salvador is concentrated in the hands of a few families, he said. The United States is supporting the ruling militarycivilian junta in El Salvador by supplying its armies with military aid, advisers and troop training, Master said. According to leaflets distributed at the speech, 1,000 Salvadoran soldiers started training at Fort Bragg, N.C., Jan. 11. About 600 Salvadoran junior officers are scheduled to begin training at Fort Benning,Ga., today. The United States is aiding the junta be cause of fears that El Salvador might be come communist if the present government is overthrown, Master said. But by aiding the junta, the United States is supporting a repressive government at the expense of the Salvadoran people, he said. This country's involvement in Vietnam started in the same way as involvement in El Salvador has started, with the sending of advisers and military aid, Master said. To prevent the Central American country from becoming the next Vietnam, the United States should end intervention in its political affairs, Master said. "If we can develop and build a very strong anti-war movement, we can stop another Vietnam war from developing," he said.
