Psychologist, UNL professor
debate homosexuality issue
Ily Chris Welsch
In an emotional debate Thursday on the
psychological and social aspects of homo
sexuality, James K. Cole, a UNL psycholo
gy professor, took the stand against Paul
Cameron, a Lincoln psychologist.
Cole began the VA hour debate in the
Nebraska Union, defending gay rights and
opposing Cameron's anti-homosexual
stance.
Cole questioned Cameron's claim to be-.
ing an expert on homosexuality, and ac
cused him of violating the American Psy
chology Association's code of ethics.
"Cameron has referred to homosex
uals as 'an infectious tribe, who are lethal
and dangerous to themselves and socie
ty,' " Cole said. "He has manipulated fig
ures, used obscure language and used ap
peals to fear and emotion to prove his
point."
Cole had statistical tables handed out
to the audience from an unpublished Kin
sey Institute report that Cameron used to
support his views. Cole pointed out what
he called fallacies in the way Cameron had
used the tables.
"Cameron has used arbitrary statistics
with non-representative samplings and un
controlled variables," Cole said.
Cameron defended his use of the Kin
sey data and stated the reasoning behind
his anti-homosexual stance.
"The question at hand is whether or not
our society should change to accommodate
homosexuals," Cameron said. "I admit the
evidence we have is weak, but can we ques
tion the judgment of our forefathers?
"The writers of the past in the west
ern world have deemed homosexuals as
less-than-desirable citizens." he said.
The Kinsey data shows that homosex
uals are more likely to be unhappy, suici
dal and criminal, Cameron said. Homosex
uals take a disproportionate number of vir
gins and recruit more young people than
their heterosexual counterparts, he said.
Cole ended his argument with a plea for
homosexuals to be viewed as people and as
individuals.
"Homosexuals are people - some good,
some bad. They appear in all walks of life
and cannot be viewed as monsters," Cole
said. "I am not a heterosexual; I am not a
homosexual. I am not a bisexual or an
asexual. I am not a stereotype."
Cameron said Cole's statements are ir
relevant. "Homosexuals are people; that is irrel
evant," Cameron said. "Hitler and Stalin
were people too. Nice people can do less
than pleasant things.
"We have some hard choices to make
from insufficient data, however I don't
think the law should protect homosexuals
nor should we allow more to generate
through these laws," he said.
