Page 10 Daily Nebraskan Friday, January 22, 1982 Sports Close losses precede Husker-Cyclone matchup By Pat Higgins Close doesn't count in basketball, as the Huskers dis covered for the fifth time this season after losing to Okla homa State 52-50 Wednesday night. Nebraska also lost to Missouri and Pcnn State by two, went into overtime against Colorado State and fell to Arkansas by just one. The Huskers hope to leave their losses behind them when they take on Iowa State at the Bob Devaney Sports Center Saturday afternoon. Tipoff is slated for 2:40 p.m. "We've been playing pretty good basketball but we've lost some tough ones," Husker Coach Moc Iba said. Iowa State is similar to the Huskers because they are not very big, but they are quick and good shooters, he said. Wrestlers By Dirk Maley Today's wrestling meet with Oklahoma State is a criti cal one for Nebraska, both in terms of recruiting and in determining the future secdings for the Big Eight Champ ionships. Coach Bob Fehrs said a win against the fourth-ranked Cowboys would give the Huskers some publicity and am munition for use in future recruiting battles. When recruit ing people in this area, Fehrs said the Huskers usually go head-to-head against the Oklahoma schools. Although the Big Eight Championships are more than a month away, a wrestler's performance in conference dual meets determines his seeding potential at the tournament. Fehrs said the secdings are critical because only five wrestlers compete in each weight class. A Feb. 6 dual with Missouri is equalJy important as it marks the regular-season conference finale for the Huskers. Nebraska, ranked ninth by Amateur Wrestling News, enters the meet with a 6-2 dual record while Oklahoma State boasts an 11-1 mark. The Cowboys will be the Huskers' third Big Eight op ponent. In its other conference outings, the Huskers lost to both Oklahoma, 26-17, and to Iowa State, 26-15. CALL 472-1761 $2.50 minimum charge per day on commercial ads. Iowa State is coming in here with their heads up after beating Colorado and losing to Okla homa only by one," Iba said. Husker guard Jack Moore is still somewhat bothered by a bad leg but has continued to play. "Jack may not be as quick as he normally is," Iba said. "He hasn't shot a free throw in the last two games, which really hurts our team." Iba was not sure if Claude Renfro would continue in his starting role. Iowa State Coach Johnny Orr said the Cyclones will have to play intense defense and patient offense to win. "We arc going to have to play super to win," Orr said, "and are going to have to cut down on turnovers." Iowa State played well at Oklahoma State, Orr said, against Fehrs described the Cowboys as a "pretty good team from top to bottom." Their top two wrestlers are Randy Willingham, 118-pound class, and Ricky Stewart at 158. Stewart is the defending national champion in his weight class, while Willingham took third place honors at last sea son's national championships. According to Fehrs, the Cowboys are also good at the 135- and 150-pound classes. Nebraska should probably have an edge at the 142 pound class (Johnnie Selmon) and at the heavier weight classes, according to Fehrs. He said it's important, how ever, that each individual give his all against the Cowboys for the Huskers to have any chance at winning. "I think Nebraska can beat Oklahoma State if we get the ultimate performance from each of our individuals," Fehrs said. "We feel that we have an opportunity to beat them if we perform at our best. If we don't perform at our very best at each weight class, then I don't think we can beat them. It all boils down to each individual giving an ulti mate performance." "Nebraska only lost by two to Missouri and they should have won. They had some pretty strange calls down the stretch in that game," Orr said. Huskers top Jennies Despite suffering from what coach Colleen Matsuhara termed the "post Big Eight blues," the Nebraska womens' basketball team outlasted Central Missouri State 66-64 before 1 ,067 at the Bob Devaney Sports Center Wednes day night. "It seemed like we played the game in second gear," said Matsuhara. "This is not the team that took third place in the Big Eight." The 9-8 I Iuskcrs put themselves in a hole early missing four of their first five shots and trailing by as much as eight, at 14-6, seven minutes into the game. Guard Crystal Coleman came off the bench to spark a Husker comeback that ended with Debra Powell's layup to give Nebraska its first lead at 27-26. The Jennies, who came into the game with a 10-2 record, fought back in the second period from a three point deficit to reclaim the lead at 4948. Both teams then went cold for the next five minutes. But Carla Fades and Sarah Figg, the Jennies' top two scorers, hit consecutive baskets to put Central Missouri ahead 56-54 with 7:58 left in the game. The teams traded baskets until Janet Smith hit a 14- foot jumper to put Nebraska back in the lead at 62-60. Eades, who had 12 points in the second half, answered with a jumper to retie the game. Smith then scored again for Nebraska and drew Eades' fourth foul with 2:41 remaining. After a Central Missouri turnover Powell scored on a 15- foot jumper to put Nebraska up by four with 1:30 left on the clock. Eaues scored again to close the icad back to two. Central Missouri had the opportunity to tie the game with :25 left. Eades however, missed a 16-foot jumper with :07 to play and received her fifth foul trying to recover the rebound.
