Friday, January 15, 1982 Daily Nebraskan Page 9 Wrestling coaches predict Husker win at Drake By Mark Quaiulnhl Nebraska's 5-1 wrestling team, fresh from two victor ies in Utah, will travel cast this weekend for matches against Drake Friday and Iowa State Saturday. "We will win against Drake " said Assistant Coach Daryl Monasmith. But, he hesitated predicting a victory over Iowa State. "If we can do well in the lower weights, we'll make it competitive," Assistant Coach Kelly Ward said. He said in the Muskcr's last two wins against Utah State and BYU, the team was behind 12-3 going into the heavier weight classes. The Cyclones, however, arc always strong at all weight classes. They and the Iowa University team have occupied the first and second spots in the national rankings for most of this season. In the latest poll, the Iluskers jumped up to ninth place from the 14th position they held a week ago. Ward said Nebraska will probably use a few inexperi enced wrestlers against Drake to gain team depth. Against the Cyclones, he said he expects most of Ne braska's team points to come from Johnnie Selmon at 142 pounds, Ray Oliver at 167, Bill Schcrr at 190 and Gary Albright at heavyweight. Ward said Iowa State has two national champions at 134 and 150 pounds. Nebraska got off to a quick start in the evening's first event by grabbing second in the 400 medly relay. Nebraska coach Cal Bent, called the twin victories the biggest wins in Nebraska's history. "I don't think there's any doubt about it," Bcntz said. "Especially when you consider that we've been conference champions two years in a row and haven't beaten Kansas, Iowa State or Missouri in a dual meet yet." The Iluskers were led by freshman star Cliff Loo schen in the 200-yard backstroke. I lis time of 1:50.25 was not only good enough to win the race but qualified him for the NCAA championships as well. "Cliff did a great job," Bcntz said. "I'm sure1 it's a comfortable feeling for him to be able to qualify in January. All the hard work has paid off." Bentz noted that California brought only a partial team to the meet. "I don't know who they left home but I'm sure we beat some of their best people," he said. The Iluskers clinched their victory in the 200-yard backstroke as co-captain Matt Rye and Rick Gilbert son finished second and third. The Iluskers also scored heavily in the three meter dive which was one by freshman Reynaldo Castro. Nebraska returns to action tonight and Saturday as they host the fourth annual Mid -Winter invitational. Starting times are 6 pjn. tonight and 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. for Saturday's sessions. pounders have placed in past tournaments, and the Cy clones have a "real strong" 1 1 8-poundcr, he said. Ward said there has been noticeable improvement in Lance Milsap, Bill and Jim Schcrr, freshman Albright, and Oliver. "We're really pleased with Ray," he said, "lie's im proved 300 percent. Oliver is ranked third in the nation while Bill Schcrr is fourth. Injuries have plagued the Iluskers' lineup during the season but probably won't be a factor in this weekend's meets, Ward said. Judd Norman at 158 pounds is recuper ating from a groin injury, and Johnnie Selmon, who hasn't competed since Dec. 11, is almost up to full strength. "At Iowa State," Ward said, "he (Selmon) should wax the guy." Sports Shorts Entries for the men's, women's and co-recreational handball doubles tournament are due at 5 p.m. Tuesday in the Recreation Office, 1740 Vine St. The Nebraska women's swimming and diving team will participate in the Iowa State Invitational today and Satur day at Ames, Iowa. The Husker men's swimming and diving team will spon sor the Nebraska Invitational today and Saturday at the Bob Devaney Sports Center. Competition begins at 6 p.m. today. UNL gymnast off to international meet By Patty Pry or All-around gymnast Scott Johnson has seen nearly as much competition in international meets as he has at home this season. After appearing in the World Games in Mos cow and in competition in Tokyo earlier this year, John son will once again find himself among international rivals in the Albuquerque International Invitational this week end. The Invitational will feature gymnasts from Switzer land, Japan, China, Canada and the United States, Nebras ka Coach Francis Allen said. Nebraska was invited to send as many all-aroundcrs as it wanted, Allen said, but Johnson is the only one healthy enough to make the trip right now. Top-ranked Jim llartung underwent surgery to remove a bone chip from his elbow during the holiday break and was not permitted to resume practice until Wednesday. k'Jim's just getting back in tunc and starting to prac tice and loosen up a little," Allen said. All-arounder Phil Cahoy also let up on practice during the holidays while nursing a shoulder injury. "Cahoy's been plagued by injuries since last year," Al len said. "He's just getting over this shoulder injury, so he didn't do much over break." However, Cahoy probably would have gone with Johnson if the meet had been sche duled just a week later, he said. "It's really too bad, too," Allen said. "The boys real ly enjoy this meet." Nebraska's gymnasts were the "stars of the event" last year, he said. The meet, which is sponsored by the Albuquerque Journal, was expanded to include more competitors this year. "They're trying to give it a little more of an interna tional flair," Allen said. Johnson is one of four male competitors, who, along with four women gymnasts, will represent the United States. Competition will include three events Friday and three events Saturday, Allen said. Johnson has had plenty of recent exposure in inter national circles and should have little trouble holding his own in Albuquerque. Just last month in Japan Johnson placed fifth in all-around standings among a "bunch of really top guys." Such a showing should give Johnson a little added confidence in Albuquerque, he said. i SUNDAY DINNER at SSf CROCK ETTS Come experience our famous "Soup & Salad Bar."
