Tuesday, January 12, 1982 Daily Nebraskan Page 3 UNL recreation center construction discussed by new planning committee By Tom Sliclton Const ruction of a new recreation building with a pro jected price tag of $10 million could be in the offing, said Recreation Department Director Dan Steller. The niuch-talkcd-about recreation center, the basis of considerable argument for more than a year, is still in the planning stages, Steller said, lie said a new planning com mittee composed of faculty members and students will meet sometime in January to discuss the rough draft of a program statement it formulated in November. The program statement is the committee cvaulation of what equipment the proposed recreation center will need as well as its si.e, location and objectives. From there, Steller said, the committee's report will go to Central Planning, a committee of administrators, faculty members and students which will review it and then send it to the NU Board of Regents for final approval. Steller said current plans call for placing the center dir ectly across from the Recreation Building located at 1740 Vine St., near the Abel-Sandoz residence halls. "I think it will be a good location in close proximity to campus and residence halls, as well as being closer to East Campus," he said. If all goes well, Steller said, construction of the center will begin in 1983 and end by 1984 or 1985. He said it's hard to say whether construction will actually be under taken, although he himself favors such a plan. "We're going on the assumption it's a needed facility to take care of recreation needs," he said. "Every year, stu dents increase in their use of recreation facilities. Intra murals have increased every year since they began 10 years ago." The whole idea ot the recreation center, Steller said, is to make it possible for students to compete under one roof in all recreation activities currently offered and to provide easier access to activities in terms of time. Steller said. "You have some 3,000 people involved in basketball; where do the other 13,000 students go?" Steller said intramurals take up so much available time now that students who just want to shoot baskets or bounce a ball can only do so when intramurals arc not taking place, and that's not often, he said. "After classes arc done and the last intramural learn gets finished at 10:20 (p.m.), you have only about 1'- in the whole day to use the facilities." How much the new recreation building would cost in student fees depends on how much money comes from outside sources and donations, Steller said. "We'd like to sec outside funds pay for building and have students' fees just pay for its maintenance." In any case, Steller said, a new recreation building would offer more activities to students. "We're not just asking for a place where a student can bounce a ball," he said. "We want the students to learn skills and be able to interact with each other." Bring a friend. Donate Blood together.
