LINCOLN OI'I'ICK kqi iiwik.nt Open eyes to volunteers Mr. Warren, 1 must agree with you in the beginning and end of your witty editorial in the Tuesday Daily Nebras kan (Dec. 8) on public opinion polls. I don't trust public opinion polls, and I don't like being reduced to a statis tic. Hut you hit a soft spot with me. There arc an awful lot of student volunteers out there in the land of Gallup, and with the reduced funding for students, the ones that do find time to work with organi zations deserve a hell of a lot of credit. Not only are there college volunteer organizations that do help the sick, aged and poor, (i.e. Campus Red Cross, Circle K) but there are hundreds of dedicated self-sacrificing students on this campus who make it a much more enjoyable and educa tional place to live. Or maybe you would like to see us all help ourselves and let the regents and administration bring Shoplifting law clarified In reference to your article "Tis the season to be wary of shoplifters making merry" which ran in the Dec. 4 is sue of the Daily Nebraskan, I must add an additional com ment. Lt. Roberts of the Lincoln Police Department stat ed that he tells merchants "they must be sure the person goes outside the store with the merchandise . . ." This is a safe way of securing a 100 percent legitimate apprehension of a shoplifter by a merchant who is not ful ly educated in the art of shoplifter detection and appre hension. But beware. The law does not say that a person must remove mer chandise from the store, i.e. outside the front door, be fore he has committed the crime of larceny (shoplifting). This is a fallacy. Lt. Roberts is a highly qualified individual, and the information he presented is correct. The only problem is that all merchants do not follow these guidelines. I am currently a security officer working for a Lincoln mer chant. I have been apprehending shoplifters for six years now. The organization I work for is professional, and we strictly adhere to state law and city ordinance. We pros ecute 100 percent ot the time, no exceptions. If you think you must remove merchandise from the store, think about it. You might save a hefty sum in fines, court costs and might even stay out of jail. You might the speakers and arts and activities that they would like to see. So open your bloodshot eyes and take a look around at who is doing the work. Just remember throughout these holidays that "not a creature was stirring, not even a 11101180" but if you listen real hard, you just may hear a volunteer. And to all the people who gave up their time to make this university a better place to work (especially the great est concerts committee ever), thanks a helluva lot. See you at the next blood drive, Reid. Dennis Wheeler Chairperson University Program Council Concerts and Coffeehouses even save yourself from public ridicule and humilation by not allowing your name to be printed in the newspaper under "court news." Christmas is a happy time. Don't be foolish. Name withheld upon request Money dispute childish My letter is in response to all the letters and comments published in the Daily Nebraskan over the past few weeks, concerning the UNL band and regent's money controver sy. I feel all of the squabbling over who gets how much money is one of the most childish things I have ever witnessed. Neither the band nor the regents earned the right to go to the Orange Bowl, the football team did. All this fighting between administrators and band members is demoralizing to me, and makes me wonder whether the Orange Bowl is a game between two excellent football teams, or just a spree for some privileged in dividuals. I just feel this issue should be settled right now. It would be an awful shame to go to Miami with the public attention focused on money controversies, instead of what it should be focused on: Nebraska football.
