Computer system makes library's
periodical policy feasible official

A new system for checking out periodi
cals from Love Library will begin Jan. 1,
said Anita Cook, circulation manager.
Cook said current periodical issues will
not be available for checkout, a change
from the past policy of overnight circula
tion. Dean Waddcl, assistant dean of Public
Services of University Libraries, said the
bound periodicals policy depends on the
individual title.
"There are three possiblities of circula
tion for the bound periodicals," Waddel
said. "Number one is no circulation, two is
three-day circulation, and three is a four
week checkout period.
Waddel said the policy was changed to
"meet user needs." The new system al
lows for a maximum number of users, Wad
del said. He said the system allows greater
flexibility. Waddel said library officials
made the change because of their "desire
to improve availability."

plans journey
to tournament

The UNL Chess team will
travel to New York City to
compete in the Pan-American
Intercollegiate Chess
tournament Dec. 26
through Dec. 30.
The team tied for 20th in
last year's tournament, ac
cording to Doug Creenwalt,
a team member.
Creenwalt said the team
probably would place high
er this year. "It's hard to
say, but I would guess we
will be ranked about tenth,
but no lower than seven
teenth." A problem for the team
right now is funding. For
the first year, UNL gave the
club $74 to start a fund rais
ing drive. The team then
sponsored a tournament to
get more money.
"We really appreciate all
the donations we have re
ceived," Creenwalt said. Ac
cording to Creenwalt, the
club has $673. However, the
trip to New York City will
cost the team a minimum of
$1,000.
"We will be living under
semi-primitive conditions,"
Creenwalt said. "All the
food costs will come out of
the individual's pockets."
Greenwalt said the mem
bers will drive to New York
in a donated car. To cut ex
penses, their overnight stop
to and from the tourna
ment will be at Purdue,
where they can stay at a
UNL graduate's home.
Greenwalt said the club
has sent letters as a last min
ute plea for donations.
The UNL team is a part
of the city chess club and
meets every Thursday from
7 to 11 p.m. at the F Street
Recreation Center.

will compete against teams
like Toronto, Chicago,
Princeton, Harvard and
MIT.

circulation of periodical titles pertaining to
their department.
"The system change is only for Love Li
brary, the policies for other branches might
vary," Cook said.
A microcomputer, the Library Informa
tion Retrieval System, makes this new poli
cy on periodicals feasible. It is a multi
campus computer with branches at UNO
and the NU Medical Center, Waddel said.
He said all information on each book or
periodical, such as author, title or call num
ber, is put into the computer. A book or
periodical can be located by knowing just
one piece of information about it.
Waddel said different computer termi
nals are tied into the computer at Love Li
brary. The architecture, chemistry, life
science, engineering and C.Y. Thompson
libraries are branches.
"More branches will be added this aca
demic year," Waddel said. "The libraries of
geography, physics, music and dentistry
will be added."
