friday, december4, 1981 daily nebraskan page 9 New weight By Tail Strykcr The sheer size of it is awesome. Its potential is mind-boggling. A new addition to the Nebraska strength training complex, a 13,000 square foot weight training room, funded mainly by private donations, sits beneath the northwest corner of Memorial Stadium, and it puts any other weight training facility in America to shame, said llusker strength coach Boyd Fpley. "Right now, we've got an ideal situ ation," Fplcy said, "and I'm excited about it. This facility meets our needs exactly, and you can't do any better than that." The present situation is a far cry from the one l:plcy encountered when he came to UNL from Phoenix Junior College 12 years ago. The entire Cornhuskcr weight training facility then consisted of one small Universal weight machine and several dumbbells. Since that time, Lplcy has developed a multi-faceted weight training complex that includes facilities in the Bob Devancy Sports Center, as well as those in the stadium. During the 70s, f-pJcy became recog nized as a national leader in strength training program ideas and innovations. So, as might be expected, may other colleges and universities, often led by former llusker assistants, have copied Nebraska in developing their own strength programs. Everyone has pretty much caught up with the Muskers, Epley said. "For the past 10 years, we've tried to help high schools, colleges and professional Women cagers. . . Jean Roiss and Priscilla Gary have re placed the graduated duo of Guyla Williams and Taryn Bach is with more speed, while a third guard, Betsy Sloan, has added greater depth to the posit ion. l.rin Schricber, a 6-0 transfer from Oklahoma, averages 15.3 points a game at one forward position, while 6-1 Shelly Ilughes despite a lower scoring av erage from last year -plays the other forward position. Barbara Gilmore, a former high school teammare of lluskers Crystal Coleman, Debra Powell arid Regina Searcy, is playing well in a back-up role. Mickey said that helps because 6-1 sen ior Kim Price, who par ticularly was instrumental in the Wildcats two vict ories against Nebraska last year, is out for the season with a broken foot. The star of the Kansas State team is once again center Tammie Romstad, a 6-2 senior who was a Wade Trophy nominee last year and is averaging 16.0 points and 10.0 rebounds in the three games this year. "We have good size, with about seven players who are between 6-0 and 6-2," Ilickey said. "We had what 1 feel was our best recruiting year we've ever had, and we're looking for ward to the best season in our history." Kathy llagerstrom and Debra Powell are leading the llusker scoring this season, averaging 213 and 20.0 points, respectively. Matsuhara said sophomore Margie Reutz will not be in action for the tournament because of a foot stress factor, which was discover ed Tuesday. New philosophy "Now, I've had a change of philos ophy," he said. Where before, the lluskers have let even their Big Eight rivals study their program, now Epley has decided to keep all other collegiate coaches out of the new West Stadium Strength Complex. The mammoth new weight training area is a big advantage for Nebraska foot ball, Epley said, and this time, the lluskers plan to stay a step ahead of the compe tition. The versatile complex, which is also used for other sports, will be showcased for football recruiting purposes. "This should really give recruiting a boost," he said. "I think you'll see the results on the field." A displavwelcome area is the first thing a recruit would see on a home game Saturday upon entering the strength com plex. Epley plans to rope off the crude looking equipment he started out with as a stark contrast to the rest of the ultra modern surroundings. Next stop on the tour is the main event, a demonstration of basic lifts and use of the equipment on a specially-built stage located in the center of the vast expanse. Of course, a major feature is the multi tude of different kinds of scientifically designed equipment, both in the "circuit area," long series of machines built to de velop and maintain strength and endurance joiaam rag E. Staggers newcomers Fpley said the llusker strength complex which is not yet completed but has been in use this year, tends to be somewhat staggering to high school athletes. A filmvideotape and a sound system are helpful in recruiting, he said. "It's the largest strength facility in America," he said, (the University of In diana is second with a 6,400-square-foot training area). "It's visually overwhelming for a young recruit to come in here and see 20,000 pounds of iron." As a pioneer in strength training philoso phy, Fpley endorse AMF strength equip ment. In turn, AMF builds specific machines for Nebraska and sells them to UNL at cost. "The company builds what we ask it to build," Fpley said. "We're able to say that we want a Iriccp machine, and there it is." The equipment cresimied and lested at Nebraska will someday be sold nationwide by AMF, he said, but for now, is the ex clusive property of the lluskers. Training programs are mapped out for each player by the llusker strength staff, which uses computers located in a room just located off the main training area. A loading area with overhead hoists for de livery of machines, also adds to the complex.
