Mud dancers grapple and slop at Royal Grove
page 10
By Casey McCabc
Caught between the fervor of Monday Night Football
and Wednesday's "over-the-hill" parties is Tuesday, a lull
in Lincoln's nighttime entertainment.
If you're tired of movies, television, and loitering
around bowling alleys, the prospect of watching mud
wrestling at the Royal Grove becomes more promising.
I was informed at the door that it was not mud wrest
ling as I had presumed, but mud "dancing," a sport I had
never heard of. More on that definition later.
Mud dancing serves as the halftime entertainment for
the live bands on Tuesday nights at the Grove. On this

particular evening it is a run-of-the-mill mainstream rock
group called Wakefield. As assistants set up the foam,
tarps and mud mixture on the dance floor, an emcee
warms up the growing crowd.
This man looks like John Bclushi, but his style more
closely resembles Bill Murray's Saturday Night Live
"lounge lizard" act. His job is to lure contestants into the
ring. Tonight the $100 first prize is apparently not
enough. Only one couple has volunteered and the crowd is
getting restless for some action.
His persistence and relentless coaxing pay off as five
couples are cheered into the ring. They can be any com

malefemale combination dominates but it was two
women who took first prize.
As participants climb into the ring, the nature of the
contest becomes clear. Mud dancing, it seems, consists of

As the band plays such music as "Cocaine" and "Dirty
Deeds Done Dirt Cheap" our mud affectionados arc en
couraged to have fun, for the judges will be judging on en
tertainment value, not athletic expertise.
The emcee calls out "skin to win," a true prophecy
considering that the couples who managed to keep their
private parts in the confines of their swimming suits fin
ished out of the money. The Royal Grove provides the
swim suits, shower facilities and after-dancing sweatsuits.
A quick check with the Lincoln Police Department ver
ified that mud-wrestling is not illegal, so the Grove's
switch to mud-"dancing" is apparently for aesthetic rea
sons. From my mud-splattered ringside perspective the sport
appears no more distasteful than an average evening at
most singles bars. And as far as spiritually rewarding Tues
day night entertainment, it's a step ahead of staying at
home and watching Too Close For Comfort.
