Wednesday, december 2, 1981 daily nebraskan page 3 Physicist follows moon shadows By Laura Garrison He has followed the sun to Africa, Siberia and South America; only to see it disappear behind the moon. Carroll Moore, a professor who has taught physics and astronomy for 26 years at Nebraska Wesleyan University, has made a hobby of chasing total solar eclipses. Moore has seen eight total solar eclipses. He said a total eclipse is when the sun's light is blocked out completely by the moon and the only visible light is the outer corona of the sun, which is the pearly white atmosphere around the sun and is one million times brighter. Moore plans his eclipse expeditions a year in advance, making careful travel arrangements so he will be able to stay as close as possible to the path of totality the eclipse will follow. The path that the sun follows is usually 60 miles wide. Often even the most careful plans don't work out, Moore said. "We were traveling to Africa by ship," Moore said. "The country was suffering from severe drought, but the eclipse was going to be one of the longest, lasting seven and a half minutes. There have been only three eclipses that lasted that long in 1 ,000 years. "During the last leg of the journey before reaching the path of totality, the ship blew one of its two main engines," Moore said. "We made it to the viewing site within 15 minutes of the eclipse." Moore said his main reason for following the eclipses is for classroom study. He takes photographs at different exposures of the inner corona and outer corona as the eclipse approaches. The photographs can help students study the atmos phere and energy of the sun, he said. Weather conditions and patterns are carefully studied six months ahead of the scheduled eclipse time. This helps him find out if a trip could be "clouded out," he said. Moore said during one trip to Canada, north of the Arctic Circle, the sky was almost covered with clouds, but Holistic health subject of talk The Lincoln YWCA, 1432 N. Location is essential to view a total eclipse, he said. A few miles or even a few feet away from the path of totality, the eclipse will not be as apparent and will be considered a partial eclipse. Four more total eclipses are expected to take place during this century, Moore said. Moore is already saving his money for an eclipse in June 1983 near New Zealand. "My wife is hooked on making the trips since her first one to South America," Moore said. "It's a marvelous experience." nil.
