friday, november 13, 1981 daily nebraskan page 3 Students' Day meant to warn of UNL's decline In an attempt to alert Nebraska citizens to a decline in quality education at UNL, the ASUN Senate wUl sponsor the 1981 Students' Day Saturday. The senators and Government liaison Committee members will gather at the Ne braska Union at 10:30 a.m. to present a slide show on student life and distribute leaflets about the efforts of recent financial aid and budget cuts. Sen. Cheryl Hoelting said the pre-game presentation will focus on the non-compet- itive salaries the university offers its teach ers compared to other universities, the ris ing number of students who cannot return to school because they were denied financial aid and the effects of the $43 million reduction in the NU budget by the special session of the Nebraska Legislature last week. The UNL faculty receives the second lowest salary in the Big Eight, Hoelting said. The university is losing high quality teachers to higher-paying schools. Hoelting added that the university does have many excellent teachers, whose dedication to the university is keeping them at UNL. The reduction in financial aid has pre vented hundreds of students from return ing to school this semester, Hoelting said. Additional cuts are expected next year, affecting even more students, she said. Hoelting said Gov. Charles TTione's bud get cuts wiU tarnish any hope of a salary in crease for teachers, delay renovation pro jects and possibly cause cancellation of some classes. By promoting Students Day on a home football game day, Hoelting said the senate is trying to reach the universities constitu ents - Nebraska taxpayers. Hoelting asks that Big Red fans who are concerned about the decline in the quality of education at UNL, convey their senti ment to their state senators. If Student Day was held a few weeks ago,' Hoelting said, 4t,ve might have saved a couple million dollars."
