By Joe Kreizinger Pressure and criticism from co-workers, judges and the general public in accepting women in today's law field may at times be trying, said Lincoln attorney Jackie Bailey. Bailey's lecture, "Women in Law " was presented Tuesday as part of the "omcn in Perspective" series sponsored by the Stu dent YWCA, the Women's Resource Center and the University Program Council. Bailey said that although the stereotypi cal pressures still exist toward women, they are being lessened. She noted that nearly one-third of her classmates at the UNL Law College were women. "1 thought 1 would be the only woman there," Bailey said. "It was wonderfully in spiring to see all the others in the same position. There is strength in these numbers." Bailey said few women today open their own practices. She said the general public's misconception is that women were well suited for government jobs but not opening their own firms. "Women today need to practice con sciousness raising among themselves," Railev said. "We shouldn't have we are better than anyone else, man or wo man." Bailey said a client should hire an attorney who is experienced in the type of case involved, whether the attorney is male or female. She said judges will not give "extra points" or make detractions from a case because of the representing attorney's sex. According to Bailey, a law student's best qualifications are the abilities to "read, comprehend and write." "Students with a good background in English may sometimes have the edge," she said. She also said outside activities and extra curricular functions are important to the future of prospective law students, especially if a student's entrance exam was' on the borderline of failure. Talking with accomplished attorneys can also be beneficial to the law student, Bailey said. "You can ask them how they have made it to where they are now, and get suggest ions," she said. "People in the law pro fession need constant encouragement to cope with daily pressures." A GIVE WARMTH WITH CALIFORNIA SUNSHINE. The Greatest Gift Ever!
