Nebraska gymnasts also took four of the five top all-around spots, which were deter mined by a combination of compulsory scores on Friday and optional scores on Saturday. UNL's Jim Hartung captured the all around title with a score of 1 14.8 despite a dislocated finger which Nebraska Coach Francis Allen said was "five times the size it should be" during competition Friday. After the sixth event, the high bar, Bowers was in fourth place, with a 53.05 over Babcock's 53. For freshman Bowers, the Big Eight In vitational was his initiation into college gymnastics and also his first collegiate competition against his twin brother Mark, an Iowa State gymnast. Hartung's injured finger seemed to have little effect on his performance, as he won individual championships in the pommel horse, rings and high bar. Johnson took first in the parallel bars and UNL's Steve Elliott won the vault championship. Phil Cahoy, slated as an all-arounder just "1 asked him how he felt, and he said he was getting pretty tired halfway through practices," Allen said. Because Cahoy was leaving for the World Games training camp in West Ger many with Hartung and Johnson Sunday morning, Allen said he would rather see him sit out on Friday and do well on Satur day, so he would be well-rested and more confident for the trip. Allen said the meet was a good oppor tunity for different team members to gain experience, including Bowers and Mikus in all-around competition, Derek Blanks on rings and Frank Hibbitts and John Balluff on pommel horse. "We're not too disappointed at all," Allen said. "We could have done better on high bar, but I think the crowd was pretty well entertained and we're pretty well pleased with ourselves." The Nebraska volleyball team was eliminated in pool play of the National Invitational Tournament at Los Angeles, Calif., Friday. The Huskers finished pool competition with a 14 record. The team title went to Hawaii with a 13-15, 15-5, 15-12 win against San Diego State. Tight end Jamie Williams and quarterback Turner Gill were the only two Huskers to suffer significant injur ies in Saturday's Oklahoma State Nebraska football game, according to a report in the Omaha World-Herald. Williams sprained his right knee on the opening kickoff and Gill suffered bruised ribs on his right side, the news paper said.
