monday, november 9, 1981 page 8 daily nebraskan Nebraska rolls to easy Oklahoma State victory By Jeff Goodwin Stillwater, Okla. - Over the years, few people have compared the Oklahoma State Cowboys to the Oklahoma Sooners. But Saturday, the Cowboys resembled the Sooners in at least ore phase of the game -turnovers. Nebraska picked off six Cowboy passes and recovered one fumble as it roiled to a surprisingly easy 54-7 win before a crowd of 48,500 and a regional television audi ence. The Huskers showed they meant bus iness on the first drive of the game when they took the opening kickoff and went 86 yards in nine plays. Quarterback Turner Gill capped the drive with a four-yard touchdown run. Significantly, 65 of those yards came on the ground. Going into Saturday's game, the Cowboys had only given up an average of 67 yards on the ground over the course of an entire game. Nebraska offensive tackle Dan Hurley said the Huskers were confident they could move the ball on the Cowboys. "We thought we could run on them," he said. "We were a more physical team. We knew we had one of the best offensive lines we've had at Nebraska. Today we wanted to prove it." Nebraska's second scoring drive was al most a carbon copy of its first. Reverse to wingback The Huskers went 85 yards in 1 1 plays, all on the ground. The big play in the drive was a reverse to wingback Anthony Steels who gained 29 yards. Gill scored the touchdown on a 9-yard run, a play on which Oklahoma State was offside. "Everyone kind of hesitated when they (OSU) jumped offside," Gill said. "I just ran the ball over." That made the socre 14-0, and it was obvious the Cowboys were in for a long afternoon. Tilings didn't improve for the Cowboys on the next series. On Oklahoma State's second play from scrimmage, Husker de fensive end Jimmy Williams intercepted a pass from Cowboy quarterback John Doerner, and Nebraska was back in bus iness against the Cowboy 36-yard line. Gill scrambled for 30 yards down to the 6 and it appeared the Huskers were going to go ahead 21-0. The Cowboy defense stiffened, and Ne braska had to settle for a 27-yard field goal by Eddie Neil. Nebraska had its chances to put the Cowboys away in the second quarter, but was unable to capitalize on them. After cornerback Ric Lindquist recover ed a fumble by Cowboy running back Shawn Jones at the Nebraska. 49 -yard line, the Huskers drove to the Cowboy 1-yard line. The Cowboys stopped I-back Mike Rozier twice at that point and took over on downs. Pass interception OSU was able to get the big defensive play as cornerback Allen Lyday intercept ed another Doerner pass. The Huskers were later stopped when OSU recovered a Gill fumble. The Huskers threatened the Cowboys once more just before the end of the half. They took over the ball on their own 16 yard line and drove steadily down the field, going all the way to the Cowboy 29-yard line before safety Pete DiClementi killed the drive by intercepting Gill. Oklahoma State went all. the way to the Nebraska 9-yard line, where the Cowboys tried a field goal with only four seconds left in the half. The kick by freshman Larry Roach sailed left. It was the first attempt he had missed inside the 45-yard line all year. The Huskers put the game away in the third quarter by scoring four touchdowns. The defense again came up with the big play to put the Huskers in scoring position with Williams coming up with an inter ception at the OSU 13-yard line. It took the Huskers three plays to score, the touchdown coming on a 9-yard pass from Gill to tight end Mitch Krenk. It also marked Gill's final appearance of the after noon as he suffered bruised ribs on the play. Nebraska got the ball back on the next play when OSU was called for roughing the kicker. Roger Craig then took a pitch from reserve quarterback Mark Mauer and went around the right end for a 69-yard touch down run. Cowboys score The only bright spot for the Cowboys came on the next series. OSU drove 80 yards on 1 1 plays with the series ending on an 8-yard pass from reserve quarterback Rusty Higler to wingback Ron Ingram for the touchdown. It was the first time in 22 quarters a touchdown had been scored against the Nebraska defense. Nebraska quickly returned the favor when Mike Rozier took the kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown. Even the defense got into the scoring act as defensive tackle Tom Gdowski sack ed quarterback Ike Johnson in the end zone for a safety. The Huskers' dominance was evident in the final statistics. They rolled up 526 total yards, including 425 on the ground. The Blackshirts allowed the OSU rushing attack only 41 yards in 37 carries. Both Rozier and Craig gained over 100 yards for the Huskers, Craig getting 121 in 12 carries and Rozier 102 in 19 carries. Nebraska Coach Tom Osborne said he was pleased with the Huskers effort. "I think this was the best we have 'play ed," he said. "We didn't play very well the last two weeks." "They (OSU) are a good football team. Turnovers had a lot to do with the high score," he said. Oklahoma State Coach Jimmy Johnson said his team was outmanned. "We took a physical beating from a great football team," Johnson said. "We just weren't physically able to match up with them. Our kids were halfway in awe of Nebraska before the game even started. You can see why." Nebraska dominated the diving, which was important to the outcome as it caputred the first six positions on the 1 -meter boards and the first four on the 3-meter event. "We wanted to improve," Lucero said. "We didn't want to leave the dives short and use proper arm move ment." Lucero had praise for diving Coach Jeff Huber. "If it wasn't for him I probably wouldn't have won to day. He works well with people and he cares so much. We wouldn't have a number one diving team if it wasn't for him." Huppert said the team showed a lot of character in de feating Wyoming, a team the Huskers didn.'t beat last year. "There is a lot of excitement on this team," Huppert said, "especially among the upperclassmen. They knew what it was like last year." Huppert said he was pleased with the performances of Marie Suppes and Keown. 'They both came off injuries and were out of the pool for a week," he said. 'They are not sprinters but we had to use them there. We had to mix people around. We did not swim our strongest line-up today because of illness." The Nebraska men's team also competed against UNO at the Sports Center pool Saturday but no team score was kept.
