Dworak won't seek governor's post
By Jeff Goodwin
Sen. Don Dworak of Columbus ended speculation
of a possible gubernatorial bid when he announced Wed
nesday that he will not run for the Democratic nominat
ion for governor in 1982.
Dworak, who switched his party affiliation from
Republican to Democrat last June, was rumored to be
considered a run for the governor's office.
Dworak said the special legislative session called last
week by Gov. Charles Thone brought his decision to a
head.
"People's reaction to me when I made a statement
was that I was acting as a poUtical candidate," Dworak
said. "This precludes me from making an aggressive
campaign."
Dworak added that he didn't want statements he has
made or will make during the special session to be inter
preted as politically motivated.
"My responsibility is as a Legislative senator first,"
he said.
In a press release issued Wednesday, Dworak said
he had learned during travels around the state this summer
that many Nebraskans perceive a void of leadership
in the governor's office.
Calling Gov. Thone indecisive, weak and politically
motivated, he said the special session has "exposed the
ploy of the governor and his department heads designed
to confuse and deceive people."
Dworak said Thone is trying to salvage his political
career by shifting fiscal responsibility from the governor
and his advisors to the Legislature.
He said revenue projections have been changed to ach
ieve political purposes and that time limitations and cur
tailment of debate indicates to him that Thone is not
searching for a fair solution to the budget crisis.
