"Anytime you get involved in a highly emotional ball game it usually favors the defense," Osborne said. "On de fense you can really turn yourself loose but being highly emotional and keyed up does not help you a lot on offense. "You've got to give Missouri a lot of credit on de fense," he said. 'They played awfully well up front." Osborne said he expected the Tigers to be keyed up after their loss to Iowa State, but the Nebraska Blackshirts also had a good game. "Most people are inclined toward offense, but when it comes down to a good football team, a good defense is paramount," he said. "It's the defense that holds you in there." "Ever since Penn State, we have played pretty good de fense. Right now, we're a completely different defensive football team than we were in that game." Osborne pointed out left tackles Toby Williams and Tom Gdowski, right tackle Henry Waechter, nose guard Jeff Merrell, right end Tony Felici and linebacker Steve McWhirter as Husker defenders who had exceptionally good games. Osborne also praised the punting of Grant Campbell which helped keep the Tigers deep in their own territory most of the day. "We punted well and covered well, but there may have been a problem on field goals," Osborne said of the UNL kicking game. Osborne said the offense played "sporadic" but again gave credit to the Mizzou defense. He said the fact that the Huskers committed only one turnover may have been the best part of the offense's performance . "We did control the ball at times and we did move the ball pretty well at times," Osborne said. 'That enabled us to maintain pretty good field position throughout the game." Osborne said sophomore quarterback Turner Gill got off to a slow start but played well in the second half. He said Missouri's blitzes slowed down the passing game hi mi in i in m m II Mil ll ll. i I I I I i 'I m .... "He got some passes off that he didn't complete but maybe nobody else would have gotten them off. We hope that people realize Turner's not a superman. No one per son can do it. It takes the whole ball of wax." The Huskers came out of the Mizzou game in good shape injury-wise. Fullback Mark Moravec bruised his shoulder but was the only player to receive any serious in jury. Osborne said the Huskers cannot afford a letdown this week against Kansas. "I'd like to remind people we're playing a team that is 5-2. They've done some good things," Osborne said. "A lot of people counted them out as soon as they lost Kerwin Bell but one player doesn't make a team." The Jayhawks will bring another tough defense to Memorial Stadium which could give the Huskers prob lems, he said. 'Theyve been involved in a number of low-scoring games. Oklahoma is really the only team that got to them. They got them on the run and broke it open."
