Huskers get
in tough defensive battle
By Jeff Goodwin
Columbia, Mo. - In the first half of
Saturday's Nebraska-Missouri football
game, it appeared no one wanted to win
the game. For most of the second half, it
appeared that no one would win the game.
That changed when Husker fullback Phil
Bates plunged over from the 3-yard line

JV dominates second
By Ward W. Triplett III
The Nebraska junior varsity football
team didn't roll over the UNO Mavericks as
it did three earlier opponents, but the
Huskers dominated the second half to post
a 22-6 win Friday afternoon at Memorial
Stadium.

with 23 seconds left to give Nebraska a 6-0
victory. The touchdown climaxed a 10
play, 64-yard drive which ate 2: 13 off the
clock.
"On that last drive we all just wanted to
do our own assignments," Bates said.
"Everyone did what they had to do and
that made the difference."
Until Bates touchdown it appeared the
game would be a story of lost opportunit
ies for the Huskers.
Nebraska dodged a bullet on the second
play of the game when Missouri running
back George Shorthose, after beating the
Husker secondary, dropped a pass from
Tiger quarterback Mike Hyde. As things
turned out, it was to be the Tigers best
scoring chance of the afternoon.
After a 26-yard punt by Missouri's Eric
Schmidt, Nebraska took over the ball on
the Missouri 32.
The Huskers quickly gained a first down
and it appeared they were on their way to
a touchdown. But then Husker quarterback
Turner Gill fumbled while attempting to
pitch to I-back Mike Rozier, and the Tigers
recovered.
It was the first of several scoring
chances the Huskers saw slip away in the
first half. Three times the Huskers started
drives in the first half inside of Missouri's
40-yard line. Each time the Huskers were
turned away without a score.
Missouri's offense, which had averaged
almost 3 1 points a game, was stopped al
most completely by Nebraska's defense.
Defensive end Tony Felici, who led the
Blackshirts with 12 tackles including three
quarterback sacks, said the Huskers were
ready for Missouri's offense.

record stand at 5-0 and marked the 11th
straight junior varsity win for Coach Frank
Solich.
Solich said the Huskers made a lot of
mental errors and played lackadaisical in
the first half.
"It's kind of ironic that that would
happen in this game because I thought we
had one of our best weeks of practice since

half to halt Mavericks
we've been here," Solich said.
"But you've got to give UNO credit.
Every year they set out to prove some
thing, and they played very well," he said.
The Mavericks snapped the Husker
hopes for a record-breaking shut-out in the
first two minutes, when Jim Young
recovered an opening-kickoff fumble by
Shane Swanson at the Husker 10-yard line.
Terry Evans, who has a 4.8-yard mshing
average and has made one touchdown for
the varsity Mavericks this year, scored on a
1-yard run four plays later. The extra-point
attempt was blocked by Todd Fisher to
keep the Mavericks at six points.
After drives by both the Huskers and
the Mavericks stalled, UNO punter David
Volejnik had his kick blocked by Scott
Nelson. Scott Strasberger won the scramble
for the ball in the end zone, and one David
Schneider kick later, the Huskers were on
top to stay, 7-6.
Fullback Tom Rathman scored on a 23
yard run midway through the second
quarter, and I-back Will Curtis picked up
26 of his 75 yards on a touchdown run in
the third period.

The touchdown made the walk-on from
Baltimore, Md the leading scorer in Ne
braska junior varsity history. It also broke
the record of touchdowns scored held by
John O'Leary and Walter Wallace
UNO could manage only 62 yards of
total offense in the second half, largely be
cause of a defense led by defensive ends
Strasberger and Greg Reeves. The Huskers
tallied their final points on a 31 -yard field
goal by Schneider.
Solich said the team will continue to
work out for at least another two weeks
and might play a second game against the
redshirts.
"It's hard to compare this year's team
to the one last year," Solich said. "Last
year we recruited more in the area of
quarterbacks, wingbacks, and secondary
men and they did a lot of their scoring on
big plays. This year we recruited more
along the lines of defensive linemen and
linebackers, and they did it mostly on long
drives.
This.was an exceptionally strong and
aggressive ball team. In looking at them
both, I'd think these were two of the best
teams we've ever had here," he said.
