KRNU provides experience for more than 100 students KRNU radio, 903 on the FM dial, provides profes sional experience to broad casting students in a variety of radio-related activities, said Larry Walklin, chair man of broadcasting in the School of Journalism and general manager of KRNU. The activities involve all news and talk formats for the station, music formats featuring rock, classical and jazz and public affairs pro gramming. Students also are involved with the technical side of broadcasting, Walklin said. "They don't repair equipment, but they are ex pected to understand its operation," he said. Students in four broad casting courses are directly involved with KRNU, Walklin said. Introductory broadcasting production courses deal with the pro duction and programming aspects of the station. Two broadcast reporting classes handle the news operation of the station. As part of their cur riculum in broadcasting, 100 to 125 students parti cipate in the operation of the radio station, Walklin said. The station has been in operation since Feb. 23, 1980, and has won a variety of national and area awards, Walklin said. In competition with all types of radio stations, the student-operated station has won awards from the Major Armstrong Foundation, the Associated Press in Nebraska and the Northwest Broadcast News Association. It has also won an award from the Aksar-ben-sponsored competition for the Nebraska Broad casters Association in three of the last four years. Walklin said most of Lincoln can receive KRNU, except for some pockets of the city that are affected by interference because of electrical circumstances and other radio stations.
