A
Outsiders appointed
to make inside study
of cancer institution
Three internationally known scientists were appointed
to review the Eppley Cancer Institute in Omaha.
The team was to contribute ideas about the future of
the institute, including better use of existing facilities
and an increase in useful studies on cancer research,
said Dr. David Purtilo, pathology professor and chairman
of the committee who appointed the team.
"It's always useful to get an outsider's opinion," he
said. "It's very common to get consultants who may
have insights into opportunities that we might have
missed."
The team arrived in Omaha last Sunday. Purtilo said,
and concluded its review on Tuesday. However, the
team's report will not be released for another two weeks,
he added.
Purtilo said there were limitations in choosing the
team, but the three members chosen represented a balance
of varying views.
A review team was appointed last year too, but action
was blocked by former director Philippe Shubik. One
member from that team was also a participant in the rec
ent review, but the other two previous members were
unavailable, Purtilo said.
The committee that appointed the three-man team is
also looking for a replacement for Shubik.
"Many people will have various ideas about what will
be best for the institute," Purtilo said. "We're just looking
for a direction to do what's ultimately best."
The members of the review team are: Dr. Louis Simin
ovich of the University of Toronto Hospital for Sick
Children, Dr. George Martin of the University of Wash
ington in Seattle and Dr. Lee Wattenberg of the University
of Minnesota Pathology Department.
Videotape library
generates profits
By Tom Shelton
The Great Plains Nation
al Instructional Library
(GPN), a major distributor
of recorded videotape in
structional programs, has
enjoyed considerable
growth since its beginning as
a pilot program of the feder
al government, said Paul
Schupbach, GPN director.
The organization began
operating in February of
1962, and received federal
aid its first three years. Now
GPN receives enough reve
nue through the sale of vide
otape materials that it can
support itself, Schupbach
said.
The non-profit organiza
tion sells more than $1 mil
lion worth of videotape ma
terials annually, Schupbach
said.
GPN is a service agency
of UNL, and Schuback said
its purpose is to "identify
quality programs so we can
distribute them to other
institutions so they can use
them."
Schuback said GPN uses
its revenues to pay royal
ties to the producers of ma
terial it distributes, to re
produce and manufacture
videotapes and to. operate
its facilities it uses.
Schupbach said GPN dis
tributes materials believed
to be quality programs of
education. He said GPN dis
tributes video-recorded ma
terials to learning institu
tions where needed to save
them the trouble of having
to produce the tapes them
selves. Although mainly a dis
tributor of video tapes,
Schupback said GPN has
produced some original ma
terial for distribution. He
mentioned two original ser
ies, one involving children's
mental health, and one de
scribing proper television
use in classrooms.
Schupbach said GPN has
gone international by receiv
ing and distributing material
to and from other countries.
Schupbach said GPN dis
tributes videotapes to state
education departments,
schools from elementary to
postgraduate levels and to
public television stations.
