Women athletes switch championships to NCAA

Nebraska women's athletic teams have switched allegi
ance this year because, "The AIAW was not productive
and alert to women's needs, said Women's Athletic Dir
ector June Davis.
The Huskers will play in the National Collegiate
Athletic Association national championships rather than
the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women.
"A frustration with the AIAW had developed over the
past five years and the interest of the women's program
was overlooked," Davis said.
Davis said the main differences between the AIAW and
the NCAA are in recruiting. Under AIAW rules, visits to
the campus by prospective athletes cannot be paid for by
the university. An athlete must finance all her recruiting
trips.
"Athletes whose parents can afford to fly them around
the country to look at different colleges have a great
advantage over the lower-income athletes who cannot
even afford to take the bus to look at a school," Davis
said.
"Under AIAW, you get athletes who accept scholar
ships at schools they have never visited. If a girl comes and
finds out she cannot adjust, then she has wasted one year
of her life and we have wasted a scholarship."
The NCAA rules allow three in-person, off campus re
cruiting visits with the athletes. AIAW does not allow any
off campus recruiting.
The NCAA says one expense paid, but on-campus visit
to the campus is allowed. AIAW rules say the cost of
travel cannot be paid, but on-campus meals and on
campus lodging can.
More expenses
Davis said more money will be spent in recruiting, but
will result in equal opportunity for women. Financially
this would be counteracted because unlike the AIAW, the
NCAA pays teams for going to its championships. Since
the NCAA limit on scholarships is less than the AIAW
limit, money also will be made-up there.
"We want to be a member of the best organization
with the best exposure and opportunity," Davis said.
Davis said UNL will gain more exposure with the
NCAA package because the NCAA has developed an
expertise for negotiating television contracts and working
with promotion.

run in women's sports and they are willing to tread water
with us until we reach that point"
There has been discussion of the change for about
three or four years. Initially, the AIAW had a concern for
women, and they wanted to see progress," Davis said.
"But as time goes on and you see an organization not
working in the best interest of your program, you must
move on."
Because of the growing discontentment with the
AIAW, the NCAA put together a national championship
package. NCAA will offer championships in all women
sports except indoor track this year.
Husker JV bushwhacks the Cowboys

There's an old saying in Chicago politics that goes,
"vote early and vote often."
Nebraska's junior varsity football team amended that
to "score early and score often" Friday afternoon as it
ground out at 34-6 win over Oklahoma State's junior
varsity.
Husker Coach Frank Solich was particularly pleased by
the quarterbacking.
"We really threw the ball well today," Solich said.
"Our passing game has come a long way since the start of
the year."
Nebraska opened the scoring on its first possession of
the game, driving 50 yards in eight plays. Paul Miles
scored the touchdown on a 4-yard run.
Nebraska scored again a few minutes later. Kent
McCallum returned an OSU punt 41 yards to the OSU 3
yard line. Roscoe Horn scored on the next play.
After that, the issue was never seriously in doubt. Ne
braska scored 13 more points in the second quarter to
take a 27-0 lead into the locker room.
One of those scores was made on a 10-yard run by Will
Curtis, who tied a freshman record by scoring his seventh
touchdown of the year.
"It looked like they lost a little spark when we scored
early like that " Solich said. Our defense played a big part
with field position and getting us turnovers."
The worst field position Nebraska had in the first
quarter was its own 43-yard line.
The Huskers displayed their own version of a two
minute offense in the second quarter after Todd Fisher
intercepted an OSU pass and stepped out of bounds at the
Nebraska 1.
Nebraska scored in six plays, the highlights being a 76
yard run by fullback Roscoe Horn. Nebraska's touchdown
came on a 5-yard pass from Travis Turner to Mike Hager.
Oklahoma State finally got on the scoreboard in the
third quarter after recovering a Nebraska fumble at the
Husker 19-yard line.
Nebraska closed out the scoring late in the third
quarter on a 13-yard pass from Todd Zart to Mike
Kosmicki.
The victory raised Nebraska's record for the year to
4-0. Nebraska's next game will be Oct 24 at Memorial
Stadium against the UNO junior varsity.

Davis said the NCAA, which governs all men's college
athletics, developed the women's package as a test. The
NCAA wanted to see if the women were interested in the
alternative championships. If it gets a good response, it
will consider allowing the women to join the NCAA.
Championship choice
Schools can choose whether they want to attend
NCAA championships or AIAW championships this year.
They can participate in both championships if the dates
do not overlap. Davis said Nebraska will go to the NCAA
championships only.
"The response to the NCAA has been good. The major
colleges are going NCAA. If you want to talk about a nat
ional champion, youll be looking at the winner of the
NCAA
"My gut feeling is that we'll go totally with the NCAA.
The switch to NCAA rules would mean a huge growth in
the women's athletics over the long term, it would mean
equal opportunities for women and men.
"It's hard to coordinate men and women sports when
you are working under two separate organizations. You
rarely have-the chance to hash over problems because you
have different frameworks."
Davis said the AIAW will be fighting for its existence
and already has filed a lawsuit against the NCAA.
"I bet they will be wishing that they would have done
things a little bit differently when we asked for changes
earlier, and not have been so inflexible,' Davis said.
"We tried to work with the AIAW in the early stages,
but they would not change, so there was no other alter
native but to try something different,'' she said.
After this trial year, the women's program will
decide whether to change to NCAA rules. If NCAA is
chosen, Davis said it will not go into effect until 1983
because of transitions that have to be made.
