page 10 daily nebraskan tuesday, September 22, 1981 Osborne By Larry Sparks Nebraska football Coach Tom Osborne had praise for the Cornhusker ofTense in its 34-14 win against Florida State at Monday's Extra Point Club luncheon. He also was pleased with UNL's improved intensity from the season opening loss to Iowa. "It all started up front. The line played a lot better against Florida State," he said. "We came off the ball a lot harder. "Florida State is not quite as strong defensively as they were last year. I don't think that they are all bad but you can't put them in the same category as last year," he said. Saturday's game proved the Cornhuskers have more depth in the offensive backfield than most people had ex pected, Osborne said, citing Roger Craig and Mike Rozier at I-back and Phil Bates and Doug Wilkening at fullback. "We have about as good a set of backs as we've had in a long time," Osborne said. Nebraska will have to play with the same intensity it played with against Florida State and make fewer mis takes if the Cornhuskers are going to beat Penn State, Os borne said. Team finishes second Nebraska placed second in ' the Kansas State men's tennis tournament at Manhattan, Kan., Sun day. The Huskers scored 58 points and were edged out by the Missouri team which had 59. Hal Koch placed first in No. 3 singles by defeat ing Mark Cissell of Missouri who was the 1979 Big Eight champion. Ridge Smidt was the other first place singles winner for UNL as he defeated Brian Filleat of Missouri at the No. 6 spot. In doubles, the No. 2 team of Jim Carson and Craig Johnson finished in first place. "We played very well for our first match of the season," UNL Coach Kerry McDermott said. "This is a definite confidence booster and we are on the road to a winning program. "We had some very fine individual performances and showed our strength by coming back and win ning matches after we had just lost. The ability to forget about a loss and come back to win a match an hour later shows that our kids have confidence in themselves." McDermott said. Huskers "Penn State could very well be the best offensive team we will face this year," he said. "Of course, I Haven't looked at Oklahoma yet." L.G. Searcy, a UNL coach who scouted Penn State's 52-0 win against Cincinnati two weeks ago, said the Nit tany Lions played well in the game, although they made a few mistakes early in the game. He called PSU's Curt War ner "one of the best tailbacks around" and said sopho more quarterback Todd Blackledge has picked up a great deal of experience since the Nebraska game last year. Osborne said Penn State's schedule would be to its ad vantage. The Nittany Lions had last week off, giving them two weeks to prepare for Nebraska. The only game Penn State has played was the win against Cincinnati which Os borne said allowed them to spend much of the spring and fall camps working on the Cornhuskers. Osborne said Nate Mason will start again this week at Special shoot sponsored by By Tricia Waters The UNL rifle club is recruiting new members and will give students an opportunity to shoot with air rifles at a special shoot Wednesday night. Rifle club advisor Greg Johnson said beginners and ex perts can come to the meeting and shoot at bullseye targets. Club members will be able to answer questions students have about joining the club. The free shooting event begins at 7 p jii. The rifle range is located downstairs in the Military and Naval Science Building. Johnson said the team has three good returning shoot ers in Kay Kurkman, Robin Lynch and Cary Schmidt. "They have been recognized through the Big Eight as very good shooters," he said. The rest of the club members include president, Scott Rogge; Steve Kleinschmidt, Bill Bennett and Al Terrell. Ronald Morgan assists Johnson as advisor. Two of the seven members are markswomen. "This is one sport where women do very, very well; many times better than men," Johnson said. "I have seen a lot of very good women shooters." Johnson said beginning shooters don't have to worry about lacking skills, because club members can help them learn. "Riflery is an acquired skill rather than a natural skill," he said. "We have a lot of talent in the rifle club. We can Very nice 1 bedroom apart ment. Easy location close to both campuses. Although Mason picked up only 36 yards passing Saturday, Osborne said not enough pass plays were called to get a fair indication of his ability. Tony Felici is also set to start at the defensive end spot opposite Jimmy Williams. Felici became a favorite of the fans when he took a Florida State fumble in mid-air and ran it in for a touchdown Saturday but Osborne said he has been showing promising signs all season. "Tony, of the group (defensive ends), probably has the most athletic ability. At times he lacks consistency but you have to say he has established himself," Osborne said. ABC Sports announced Monday that the Nebraska Penn State game will not be televised as was previously speculated. The network has decided to carry a regional slate of games instead of a national telecast between the Huskers and the Nittany Lions. teach people. Anybody with proper practice and tech nique can become a very good rifle shot. 'The big thing about shooting is that it requires a lot of concentration," he said. "Good shooters have the ability to block out things that distract from concentra tion." The rifle club provides all equipment needed by club members. The membership fee is $15 a year. The team works very closely with two other rifle teams, the Army and Navy ROTC teams, Johnson said. However, each team is separate, he said. So far, four meets are planned for the school year. Many of the meets are part of the eight-team city rifle league. Johnson said club members do . some shooting in October, but they work out the hardest January through March, he said. At meets, good shots can win individual trophies, and sometimes team trophies are awarded. Johnson said meets emphasize individual performance. He said the meets also help shooters develop camara derie when they get to know other shooters and exchange idea and techniques. At the Wednesday night shoot, participants will use air guns. However, club members use .22-caliber Savage Anschutz rifles made in Germany, Johnson said. He said the rifles cost nearly $ 1 ,000 each. For more information, students can call Johnson or Morgan.
