Allen sure three Moscow bound
UNL gymnasts compete for World Games spots
By Patty Pryor
Four UNL gymnasts are competing with other national
contenders for the chance to appear in the World Games
in Moscow this November, said Francis Allen, UNL gym
nasties coach.
No. i ranked Jim Ilartung, fourth-ranked Phil Cahoy,
fifth-ranked Scott Johnson and lOth-ranked Chuck
Chmelka are joining 20 other gymnasts from across the
country in the 1981 World Trials Competition which be
gan Thursday in Fort Collins, Colo.
Thr trials determine the qualifiers for seven spots on
the national team which will go to Moscow Nov. 7 to
compete with teams from all over the world, Allen said.
An eighth qualifier may be allowed, he added, but he
would attend only the training camp in West Germany
the week before the games and not the actual competi
tion. Quarterbacks...

"It's a dandy, isn't it?"
Stockstill said. "With that
kind of schedule, we can't
afford to look ahead at all.
Those teams are all so good
that we really have to take
them one at a i me."
Nebraska and Pittsburgh
both lost to Florida State
last season, and would seem
to have added incentive to
avenge those losses. But
Stockstill said he feels the
Seminoles - at least in the
Husker game - have no
reason not to be as enthu
siastic as they were last
year.
"We've got so many peo
ple starting now that didn't
play last year," he said.
"They didn't come up here
and see the 77,000 fans all
dressed in red. They asked
some of us what it was like
and stuff like that. You
know they're going to be
psyched up.
"If you can't get fired up
for Nebraska, who can you
get fired up for?" he asked.
The 24 gymnasts competing in Fort Collins qualified
for the trials at the USGF championships held in Lincoln
last May, Allen said. The field includes second-ranked
Peter Vidmar of UCLA and third-ranked Bart Conner of
Oklahoma.
The judges at the trials are all USGF officials, Allen
said, inlcuding UNL's John Scheer, from the Department
of Physical Education.
The World Games are held annually, he continued, ex
cept during the Olympic year. In the last World Games,
held in Fort Worth, Texas in 1979, Ilartung placed ninth.
Ilartung was also a member of the 1980 Olympic team,
along with Cahoy and Larry Gerard, who has since left
UNL.
However the 1980 team did not compete because of
the United States boycott of the games.
"The World Games are as important as the Olympic
Games," Allen said. "There isn't the grandeur of the Oly
mpics, but to a gymnast, it's as important to be ranked in
the World Games as it is in the Olympics."
The trials consist of compulsories which were on
Thursday and optionals today, he said. All-around compe
tition is required.
Allen, who is a member of the national coaching staff,
said he expects Hartung, Cahoy and Johnson all to make
the trip to Moscow.
"All three should definitely be on the team," he said,
"just based on their performance and how they've looked
lately."
"Johnson is really hot right now," he added. "He went
from nothing to fifth in no time. He's just been doing real
well."
Allen said he didn't think Hartung's performance
would be seriously hindered by a bone chip in his elbow.
The prospect of competing in Moscow may add to the
tension and nerves at the team trials, Allen said.
"There's a lot of pressure, but it's a different kind of
pressure," he said.
"The school's not so involved, which gives the gym
nast an individual identity.
"And they all really want to do it, they really want to
make it."
