Lincoln's city code requires bicycle licenses and licenses make tracking down a stolen bike an easier job, said UNL Police Sgt. Mylo Bushing. "It's basically for the owner's own protection," he said. "If the bicycle does get stolen, at least they've got something to go on." When a bicycle is registered, the serial number ana license number are recorded. The owner gets a copy and the Lincoln police file a copy of the registration. Students can also register bicycles at city fire depart ment stations or bicycle shops. The licenses cost $1, and are all the same, regardless of where the owners get them. Owners must show proof of ownership when they register their bicycles. If they have no proof, the police will cross-check bicycle serial numbers to ensure the bicycles aren't stolen.
