The Cornhusker Marching Band practices every morning in the stadium. Their first
performance will be at the Nebraska-Florida State game, Sept. 19.
Cornhusker Marching Band
prepares new season lineup
By Kirsten Nielsen
The Cornhusker Marching Band is tun
ing up for another season of music and
marching.
Although this year's football schedule
presents special challenges (four home
games in a row), Robert Fought, the band's
director, feels confident. ,v,v.
"Things may not always be as absolute
ly precise as we would like, but I think
audiences can still expect quality perfor
mances." Band practice ,-which began Aug. 13, has
been intense, not to say grueling, he said.
The final roster for this year's group has
about 260 members, including 24 flag and
dance corps members.
"We don't go in for the Cecil DeMille
tactics at the half-time shows," Fought
said. "I guess you'd have to say our main
attraction is our great variety of music."
The band's first performance, "at the
Florida State game Sept. 19, will feature
themes from James Bond movies.
At other games, the band will present
music from "Fame," "Porgy and Bess" and
a selection of Sousa marches. John Lennon
songs will be the theme of the homecoming
game.
Music is especially arranged for the band
several months in advance, while Fought
designs the marching formations himself. It
takes about two weeks of practice for the
group to learn a show, he said.
"It's a lot of work for a short pre-game
and a 12-minute half-time performance,"
Fought said. "Sometimes you'd like to
have the chance to do it again. But you
really just about have to have a different
show for every game."
Fought said the band rarely performs at
places other than the football games. He
said there usually is an end-of-season con
cert featuring highlights of past performances.
