Wednesday, September 2, 1981 daily nebraskan page 3 Credit card users facing new charge Several Lincoln banks and savings and loan institutions have begun charging annual fees for the use of Mastercard and VISA credit cards. Dave Patrick, executive vice president at First National Bank of Lincoln, said most cardholders pay off their bills during the interest-free period and now banks have to charge the new fees to cover costs. Patrick said Nebraska banks are among the last in the nation to begin charging the annual fees. The Nebraska Legislature passed a law this year allowing the fees. First National charges $15 a year flat rate in addition to the interest on late payments, Patrick said. The only other Lincoln bank now offering credit card service is the National Bank of Commerce, which recently opened an office in the Nebraska Union. The National Bank of Commerce charges $12 a year, said Tom Potter, executive vice president of NBC. Three Lincoln savings and loan institutions also offer the card accounts. Commercial Federal Savings and Loan charges $15 per year, said Sue Ashcraft, financial counselor at Commercial Federal. The First Federal Lincoln Savings and Loan has no annual fee, but charges 16 percent interest from the day of the charge purchase, said Howard Madison, VISA di rector for First Federal Lincoln. First Federal Lincoln offers the VISA Plastic Check, which is used like a VISA card but withdraws money from the person's individual checking account, Madison said. The Nebraska Savings and Loan charges $15 a year, said branch manager Buff Peters. Potter said he does not expect the fees to discourage potential student customers from the bank's new location in the union. "There will certainly be some change," Potter said. "Some customers have dropped the card. Most will prob ably stay. The value of the card far exceeds the $12 fee." Correction In a story in Monday's Daily Nebraskan headlined "Students turned away ticketless; hoarding blamed" Terry R. Porter was incorrectly identified as a freshman student. Porter is a freshman law student. I 7 1 1 vAV 0 D D D 0 a D D D D D D a D aaosoQaD casco on AT THE LAO BE THE HARRIS MAN.
