Wednesday, august 19, 1931 daily nebraskan page 27 Increase in freshman, transfer students expected r--M - It . 1TV i Fall enrollment at UNt will be increased, based on pre. registration figures, said the UNI director of Ai missions. -It's all speculation.- said A) Papik. "We're assuming that if we h3ve an increase in pre-registration, well have an increase in enrollment." A total of 19,166 students registered earlv, an increase of 663 over last year, he said. Anthony Schkade, assistant director of registration and records, said he expects more than last year's 3.500 stu dents to go through general registration this year. Papik said new student applications are also on the rise, but may not necessarily mean increased enrollment be cause of "multiple applications" and the uncertainty of federal aid. "Students are applying to more than one institution and closer to home, he said. "At UNL. we are anticipat ing a slight increase in both freshman and transfer stu dents." Freshman rre-reeistration increased 149 over last year, transfer students are higher by 174. Papik speculates that the increased numbers may be be cause of a greater precentage of graduates attending college. He also said that "the cost of education is such that there may be a trend" toward attending public insti tutions. "Some of the problems NU has experienced because of increases have been insufficient classes for freshmen in business, engineering and freshman English," Papik said. Harry Allen, director of institutional research and plan ning, predicts that enrollment will decrease within the next few years because of a declining number of high school graduates. "1 suspect it will decrease within the next few years," said Papik. He expects to see a decrease in first-time fresh men in the fall of 1982. Students can register from 8 ajn. to 11 ajn. and 1 p jn. to 4 pjn. Late registrations will be accepted Aug. 24. Drop-add begins Tuesday. General registration begins today and ends Friday. After filling out a worksheet and obtaining permit, fee, and time appointment cards at Administration Building 103, students wishing to register should go to the Nebras ka Union Second Floor at their appointment time. Stu dents can make either a deposit or pay full tuition at that time. Temporary identification cards will be issued at general registration. Permanent IDs will be mailed to local addresses after Aug. 31, Schkade said. Part time students who want to change to full-time status can have their IDs updated at drop-add by present ing the pink copy of their drop-add transaction, he said. ices. oris fefc yoall fee needing fos? elasess SM M Get the latest Webster's New Collegiate Dictionary that's just ideal for college students.
