Faye Mouton said no problem is too small for the ombudsman's office. The office deals with enrollment and grade problems as well as questions on library fines. "Our job is to interject some heart into the system," Moulton said. When a student or staff member can not solve a problem through established channels, the ombudsman's office can "cut through the bureaucracy," she added. Mouton said anyone needing assistance can come in and see Ombudsman Alan E. Dittmer or her, with or without an appointment. The ombudsman's office deals with 600 to 700 problems a year, she said. The office is at 14th and Vine streets in Lyman Hall 116. The phone number is 472-3633. Moulton said she felt there might be some confusion in thinking that the ombudsman's office is an advocate's office. "We don't necessarily take the side of everyone who walks through the door," she said. "Nobody gets everything they want when they walk into our office," Moulton said. Everyone must compromise, she said. Regents located at top of administrative ladder Fulfilling the three goals of the NU system-research, teaching, and public service-requires an effective adminis tration, the NU public information director said. At the top of the university's admini stration is the eight-member NU Board of Regents and three non-voting stu dent regents. The regents are elected from eight districts for six-year terms. The regents are the governing board of the univer sity. They determine final policy for tuition, salaries and construction, Raglin said. University President Ronald W. Roskens is subordinate to the board of regents. Roskens deals with the broad picture of the university, problems that affect all three campuses: UNL, UNO and the NU Medical Center. The board of regents and Roskens meet weekiy with university administra tors: William Swanson, NU vice presi dent for governmental affairs; Steven Sample, executive vice president for academic affairs; Raglin; Hans Brisch, executive assistant to the president; Alan Seagren, vice president for admini stration, and Richard Wood, university general counsel. Each of the three campuses is direct ed by its own chancellor. The chancel lors deal with daily campus concerns Chancellor Martin Massengale heads the UNL administration. Massengale is assisted by the director of institutional research and planning, Harry Allen, and Affirmative Action Director Brad Munn. The vice chancellors include Robert Rutford, research and graduate studies; John Strong, acting vice chancellor for academic affairs; Howard Ottoson, act ing vice chancellor for agriculture and natural resources; Richard Armstrong, vice chancellor for student affairs, and John Goebel, acting vice chancellor for business and finance.
