friday, may 1,1981 daily nebraskan page 11 UNL to evaluate vehicle policy By Alice Hrnicek UNL administrators and the ASUN Campus Life Committee decided Thursday to look into the Automob ile Rental Pool's policy on renting university vehicles to student organizations. A group recently was denied access to a van for a New Orleans trip. The UNL chapter of the National Agri-Marketing Association asked the CAP office for permission to rent a van starting Thursday for their trip, said Ennio Que vedo, activities director for Campus Activites and Pro grams. After being told the rental would be approved once the group had enough money, Que vedo said, the members had a fund drive to raise the money. But after the fund drive, they were told that student groups could not rent vehicles because the auto pool was questioning a legislative amendment that might increase the liabUtiy of the university. Members of the group were enroute to New Orleans and unable to comment. University policy since 1976 does not allow students to rent vehicles unless they are university employees and the use is work-related, Quevedo said. However, student groups have been renting vehicles through the auspice of the Nebraska Unions, he added. Roy Loudon, administrator of personnel and risk management, said he is formulating a policy to address the issue. The present policy may change because of the amendment, he said, but he did not know how soon he would finish it. The state's guest statute law previously required guest riders to prove gross negligence or intoxication on the part of the driver to recover injury in case of accident. With the passage this year of LB54, riders would have to prove only ordinary negligence instead of gross negli gence, said Ron Sedlacek, legal counsel for Sen. John DeCamp of Neligh who introduced the amendment. The amendment also denies close relatives of a driver the right to recover damages, Sedlacek said. The negligence change could increase the chances of liability by ihe university if it rents vehicles out to stu dents, he said. After meeting with UNL administrators and other ASUN members, Nancee Shannon, chairperson of the ASUN campus life committee, labeled the isse "very confusing." "We can't pinpoint the problem. So much research has to be done," she said. Richard Armstrong, vice chancellor for student affairs, said he knew too little about the policy to have a "sub stantial response." "I am concerned that this condition (the question of liability) exists, and I want to look for it," Armstrong said. American Red Cross Weed Math 90c in your fall schedule? The Crib will close itsN doors May 7, and when they reopen in January, 1982, the entire scene will have changed along with the name (to Union Square). "We don't have a time set for construction of the North Crib," said union director Daryi Swanson. "We still need to com plete the design, and put it out for our bidders. I hope it's possible the actual construction will be gin by June," Swanson said. The current Crib attracts about 1,500 to 2,000 cust omers a day, which isn't enough, Swanson said. The remodeled area will change the service into a fast food center, which will "serve people quickly and move them on," Swan son said. The closing of The Crib is the only new thing a student can expect to see about the Union next year. Until it reopens, a short lunch line will be set up in the South Crib, which shall remain untouched. Also, to help with the overflow of students who are used to using the Crib for studying or conversat ion, the Harvest Rooms' hours will be altered to accommodate these people. Swanson added that the time between the beginn ing plans for Union Square and the actual implementat ion of it has passed rather quickly. This is as fast as any thing gets done around here," Swanson said. mi sasffl mm BBPBffls FREE Pitcher Coupon Good at The Water Hole Horsefeathers Sat 59 to Sat 613 FREE Pitcher Coupon Good at The Water Hole Horsefeathers Sat 59 to Sat 613 FREE Pitcher Coupon Good at The Water Hole Horsefeathers Sat 59 to Sat 613 FREE Pitcher Coupon Good at The Water Hole Horsefeathers Sat 59 to Sat 613 fre!
