Record-setting swimmer
signs to become Husker
Nebraska swimming Coach Cal Bentz
has signed Cliff Looschen to a national
letter of intent to compete for UNL
next season. Looschen is from Cocoa
Beach, Fla., but has some roots in the
Cornhusker State.
Looschen 's father, a space official
for NASA, is a UNL graduate. His brother,
Scott, will be a junior on the Nebraska
swimming team.
Looschen set a record of 1:52.6 in the
200-yard backstroke at last year's national
omninclitn Althnuph the Flori-
da state championships have not been de
termined yet, he has set times of :2 1 .1
in the 50-yard freestyle and :52.9 in the
100-yard backstroke.
Nebraska won a recruiting battle with
Florida and Indiana to sign Looschen.
He is the only swimmer signed by UNL
so far but Bentz currently is looking at
several others, inclusing Tony Lazzaretti
of Omaha Creighton Prep.
The annual Nebraska Gymnastics Boos
ter Club awards banquet will be held
tonight at the Hillcrest Country Club.
The banquet will begin at 6:30 p.ni.
and tickets will be available at the door.
Tickets are $12 for adults and $4.50 for
children under 12.
Charlie Winkler of Grand Island will
be the featured speaker and the UNL
men's and women's gymnastics teams
and their coaches will be the honored
guests.

Tickets for the U.S. Gymnastics Feder
ation championships are on sale now at
the Athletic Ticket Office. The meet will
be May 21 through 23. Tickets are $5,
$4 and S3 for reserved seats and S2 for
general admission.
The UNL Rugby Club will compete
against the Omaha Goats Saturday at
1 :30 p.m. at Omaha Dodge Park. The UNL
team is 6-2 for the season.
