Triplett III The music and culture of India was brought to the Ne braska Fast Union Sunday night as the India Association of UNL held its annual India night. India Night, an annual event for 20 years in Lincoln, consisted of an Indian dinner and entertainment from the country provided mostly by Indian UNL students. C.S. "And it seemed to me many people did enjoy it." After a dinner of Tandori chicken, Pulao (fried rice with nuts). Mutter panir (peas and India cream cheese), and Aloo ghobhi (potato and cauliflower), dances and songs from the different states in India were presented. "There are 14 major languages in India, and over 1 ,000 dialects said Jaggu Jagannath, a graduate student from Madras in south India. "So there are a lot of dances with different meanings, depending on which state they came from," he said. Dance of the candles Among the dances presented was the Dance of the Candles, from the yearly festival of lights, performed by llina and Pragna Desai. A Gujrathi folk dance, it is meant to celebrate Krishna's (God's') conquering of an evil force, according to co-emcee Pieeta Bansal. Two Bengali dances from northeast India were performed, the first being a celebration of a sailor's home coming by Juni Bancrjee and Somita Basil. "In most Indian dancing, each minute gesture tells something." Bansal said. "That may be in celebration or an allusion to classical mythology." A sitar and tabla duet by Asha Singh and G. Bhullar was performed, and two solo dances by Nitish Singh, the first of which, a classical Katha dance from north India, lasted about 1 5 minutes. "Many of the dances here have been shortened," Jagannath said. "Most of the classical dances of India are like an opera here. They last up to two hours apiece." The final dance was a Punjabi folk dance that was choreographed by Sodhi. Celebrating a good harvest "The dance is in jubilation of a good harvest." Sodhi said. The Sikh farmers, of which ethnic group he is a part, are among the best farmers in India, and traditionally celebrate by having the men farmers perform a particular dance each April 13. Sodhi said. "I began dancing it when I was 4. An Indian will learn it by watching his fathers dance. It is something the parents will pass down," Sodhi said. The India Association consists of UNL's 35 Indian stu dents, 10 faculty members, and 12 others. The Sunday event was the largest of the association. Sodhi said. "I was very happy Senator (Shirley) and Mr. (Frank) Marsh could come tonight. I was so encouraged and sui prised to see Mrs. Marsh wearing a sari, an Indian dress." Sodhi said. Sodhi said he was proud of the way things turned out since the group's vice president. Abhay Gokhale. has been working on a thesis and Sodhi, a sorghum agronomy stu dent from New Delhi, had to set up the program without much help. "We had the families oi students doing the cooking, and some Americans helped out also." Sodhi said. "We had prepared food for about 400. and we got that, not including the children. I am very happy with the wa things worked out ." Corrections In Monday's storv about ihe Residence Mall Associa tion meeting.
