Kent Warneke and Dorecn Charles
were named the outstanding student
leaders on the UNL campus at a formal
announcement Iriday by Dean of" Student
Affairs David DeCoster.
DeCoster said the selection committee
of student affairs educators and student
organization presidents "felt good" about
the selection (of Warneke and Charles).
"They were proud about selecting
two students who truly exemplify leader
ship role models," DeCoster said.
Warneke and Charles, both juniors,
will receive an award that will pay for
next year's tuition, said DeCoster.
Warneke, a journalism major and
political science major from Plainview,
is a member of Farmhouse fraternity
and editor of Greek Graffiti, one of the
top three Greek-affiliated newspapers in
the country.
In addition, he has served as Walnnn..
isnacht chairman. New Student Orientat
ion student host and is associate editor
of Pearls and Rubies, the Farmhouse
international magazine.
Charles is a journalism major from
Chicago involved in ASUN and the Stu
dent Y Board. She is president of the
Afrikan People's Union and ran for ASUN
president this spring.
She also has participated in the Resi
dence Hall Association and the Afro
American Collegiate Society.
Charles said she was "surprised and
honored" by her selection.
"I think it (the award) is an inspiration
for people to get involved," she said.
"It should encourage student activity."
Warneke, too, said he was honored.
"It's proof that students without any
special talents can make a contribution
just by their willingness to participate,"
he said. "I just wish more people would
get involved."
