Early returns from survey indicate
student approval of rec programs
By Kim Hachiya
The UNL recreation department is processing the re
sults of a survey started last Wednesday.
Questionnaires were sent to 984 randomly selected stu
dents to help the department evaluate how its services are
meeting the needs of students, recreation department
Director Dan Steller said.
Early returns indicated students are generally pleased
with recreation department programs.
A computer randomly chose 194 Greeks, 478 residence
hall students and 312 off-campus residents to participate
in the survey. Steller said more surveys were sent to resi
dence hall students because they participate in more pro
grams than other students, according to results of a survey
taken three years ago.
The questionnaire asks students to rate the level of
their satisfaction with intramurals, open gyms and courts,
outdoor recreation, equipment rentals, recreational class
es, hunting and fishing licenses and World of Fun tickets.
Other questions ask students to rate their level of
awareness of department offerings and the importance
they attach to department programs.
A fourth question asks students to evaluate the fair
ness of recreation department policies on intramurals,
equipment rentals and off-campus trips.
Students are asked whether they agree the depart
ment and its services are an asset to UNL.
Steller said two important questions concern whether
students feel the department offerings are adequate and
whether the indoor recreational facilities are adequate.
Steller said the survey divides respondents by sex, liv
ing quarters and class standing so they can be tabulated
more easily.
About 30 percent of the questionnaires have been re
turned which Steller said is remarkable since they have
been out about a week.
Although the returns are sketchy, Steller said, some
trends are developing.
"Just looking offhand, we find most students think
we're doing too much or about right in the area of what
we offer and how diverse they are," he said. "The major
ity feel that the rec facilities are pretty important to very
important here at UNL
"Most people also feel that we don't have enough in
door facilities."
Steller said the department is hoping to verify the re
sults of the ASUN Fund B vote from the elections two
weeks ago with this survey. But he said the main purpose
is to get some idea of students' satisfaction with the
department.
He said the results could be helpful in developing the
proposed recreational center.
