Modern Language Floor begins recruiting push
By Linnea Fredrickson
The Modern Language Floor, Raymond
2 in Neihardt Residence Hall, is seeking to
expand its program.
Chris Lockmon, a floor resident, said
about 40 people on the floor are involved
in the language program. The other 30 or
so are regular hall residents. Modern lan
guage students would like to see the pro
gram expand to occupy the whole floor so
there aren't hard feelings between regular
students and students attempting to speak
foreign languages, she said.
Mark Cory, a UNL German professor,
said the three-year-old Modern Language
Floor was originally designed to bring
people together who have taken a language,
are presently studying a language or who
are just interested in languages.
He said some of the students have
traveled abroad and want to keep up with
a language, and others are looking forward
to going abroad and want the ongoing prac
tice in language that is possible only when
a person is around others speaking that
language.
Cory said Language Floor, where Amer
ican students develop their foreign langu
ages, is different from International House,
where foreign students live with Americans
to learn English.
Lockman said some of the residents
haven't studied languages since high school
and others are language majors. Some are
studying several languages at once.
Lockman said the floor presents an
opportunity to speak a foreign language,
but it isn't mandatory.
There is a !ab on the floor with foreign
dictionaries and other materials, and a lib
rary of brochures for people interested in
traveling.
Lockmon said Mike Wilson, the program
director, lives on the floor and teaches
Spanish and Portuguese. There also are
two assistants on the floor, one in German
and one in French, who coordinate pro
grams and are available to help residents
with their studies.
Lockmon said German is the most
common language spoken on die floor
right now; French, Spanish and Russian
are the other languages represented.
She said a one-hour conversational class
is available to language floor students in
which students get together with a langu
age professor for dinner, with presentations
and conversation afterward.
Lockmon said there are other activities
like German dinners and an upcoming
crepe party. The students had a Fasching
party and a Mardi-Gras-like costume party
at the Lincoln Hilton recently. Some stu
dents also went to an Octoberfest in
Denver, she said.
Cory said the floor will be doing more
active recruiting for language students this
year to try to fill the whole floor. He said
they will be selling concessions and con
ducting tours at the Language Fair, an
event that draws about 1,500 high school
students to campus to raise money and
generate interest in the floor.
He said mailings also are sent to high
school language teachers and that the floor
gets the support of the UNL Housing
Office.
Cory said the success of the program
comes from the support of faculty mem
bers, the housing office and the students
who are involved.
